Hi Janwood
I think You'll get a variety of answers for this question.
Having several of the major books (and some not so major), for the Camino Frances, I chose to take
"Walking the Camino de Santiago" by Davies & Cole.
I was happy enough with that choice.

I have used Brierley for my Caminos and I love his book because it allows me to plan lodging "between stages" so as to avoid the throngs of pilgrims. He also gives a little history, he has pull-out maps which are great, and the book is compact and easy to pack.

I am assuming you are referring to the Camino Frances and if forced to take one only it would be the Brierley one http://www.csj.org.uk/acatalog/The_CSJ_ ... des_7.html but the CSJ one http://www.csj.org.uk/acatalog/The_CSJ_ ... in_23.html is worth taking and on the CF provided you do not want the maps etc the CSJ one is enough.
Hi,
I'll second that- Brierley provides good maps with including alternative (less traveled) routes & detours, accurate & comprehensive accommodation information and snappy historical information. Try to get the latest edition, at least 2009 if there hasn't been an update since. I only wish John Brierley would extend his skills to cover some of the French and German routes......I'm only realising just how good his guides are when having to navigate without them :?

Hey Jan, Bev here, hope you are well. I love the PiliPala Press maps out of Vancouver or Victoria.

Check out their site at http://www.pilipalapress.com

The Camino Frances map is a no noncenseone, one day at a time with all the info you need such as hostels, distances, elevation, coffee shops, bars etc.

I also used John Brierly tour book for the Camino Portugues. It gives history and maps, but check out the home boys.
