Navigating Madrid Airport

After landing at Madrid airport, terminal two, picking up luggage and trying to transfer to terminal four for another flight, do you have to keep to the right out of the baggage area towards terminal three, taking you on a very long detour to go upstairs to the departures level of terminal two to catch the shuttle bus to terminal four? There must be an easy and direct way to go upstairs from the arrivals level of terminal two to the departures level but I couldn’t find it and the terminal staff actually directed me to take the long walking detour to go from arrivals level to the departures level of terminal two. Any advice?

I have no idea since I always arrive in terminal 4 and then have to make the pilgrimage to 4A.
