O Cebreiro had a second version of a cavalcade of Kings when a group of Spaniards advanced on the camino Frances with camels, dromedaries and a horse carriage. Ten days after the party where you are reminded of Melchor, Gaspar and Balthazar, the gateway to the French Way in Galicia saw the pilgrimage route reveal an unusual scene: a group of eight pilgrims on their way to Santiago with three camels, five camels and six horses pulling a carriage, arriving in the village after completing a stage initiated in Vega de Valcarce.
The pilgrims come from a more or less remote East, but two very specific areas of Spain: four Tudela de Duero (Valladolid), and four from Sevilla. O Cebreiro, offered a snowy landscape to make the contrast more striking. Javier Garcia Alvarez, one of those in Tudela de Duero, said yesterday, shortly after arriving in O Cebreiro, that the experience was generally very positive. The expedition entered the French Way in Sahagun.
The group is divided into two families. A Javier Garcia accompanies two children, Casiano and Mark, and a friend, Oliver Fernandez. The quartet consists of Andalusian Jose Vazquez, two sons, Jesus and Daniel and his brother, Manuel Gutierrez.
Javier Garcia is leading a company that has camels and dromedaries to use at parties, publicity events and rides, while the people of Seville are drivers who perform tours of the city center of Seville. All have gone to pilgrimages before though, Garcia says this experience is unique, as it seems to be for those who see the procession pass: the people, he explains, "looks with amazement at first, and then, with admiration."
