Pension in Melide

I am helping a friend plan a camino in pensiones and hoteles. Mundicamino is generally very helpful, but I'm coming up with a few questions.

My first is whether anyone knows the name of the new-ish place right across the street from the albergue. It has a cafeteria on the ground floor. I know it was there when I walked through in 2007 or 2008 but I hadn't seen it before.

Or, if you have another favorite place in Melide, let me know. The hotel on the main Avda. de Lugo (Hotel Carlos, I believe) is a possibility, but it looks kind of charmless. Which isn't a deal-breaker by any means.

Many thanks, buen camino, Laurie

Thanks for the help falcon. Based on one of the street signs I saw on streetview, I did a little googling and found it -- It's the Pousada Chiquitin. http://www.pousadachiquitin.es/index_es.htm

Has anyone stayed there?

Buen camino, Laurie

p.s. based solely on tripadvisor, it looks like the Hotel Carlos 96 would be preferable to this place in terms of amenities and treatment.

Yes Laurie, we stayed there in October 2009. The main Albergue was closed by the time we arrived in
Melide, due to refurbishing to get ready for Holy Year. The hotel was a normal hotel, clean and without any frills. It of course totally lacked the atmosphere of an Albergue and it was the first time that we had to choose alternate accommodation since leaving Roncesvalles and I felt a little bit sorry to have to switch to something more impersonal after all those weeks on the road! Laurie,

Just east of downtown Melide directly on the CF (Calle O Leboreiro) in the tiny hamlet O Coto is a VERY pleasant b and b, the Casa de los Somoza. Here is a web listing >>http://www.hotel-ami.es/h-324351-F/casa-de-aldea-hospederia-casa-de-los-somoza-in-melide.htm#details. This historic building set in a large garden has 10 rooms and good food. Although I have never stayed here I have often eaten here. Generally there is a large tent with bar serving food set up to welcome passing pilgrims in the garden. The barman owner is very jovial and most kind. Walking from here to Melide takes about one hour.

Prior to Melide will your friend be stopping at Palas de Rei? Just east of that town and also directly on the CF is a pleasant rustic hotel and restaurant, La Cabana.
See >> http://www.complejolacabana.com/. They seem to have a special price for pilgrims at least in winter. I have often eaten their delicious Menu de Dia but stay in the new municipal albergue next door. Once can sit in the pleasant Cabana bar for hours and access the free WiFi.

I hope that your friend has a Buen Camino,

Margaret

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

We stayed in the Hotel Carlos and found it very friendly. They had a washing machine and dryer which we paid to use too. It is much better than its outside implies.

Myself and my walking partner stayed in pousada 'Chiquitin' in Melide about a week ago, €50 for a double room, nice peregrino breakfast available and several peregrinos from both the municipal and private albergues a little further down the same street availed of it, clean and tidy bedroom and nice for a treat night.
