Pilgrim or very cheap accomodation in San Sebastian - Maps.

Hi all,

Myself and 5 friends (including my mum) are trying to plan walk the Camino del Norte from San Sebastian. I'm having real trouble finding a hostel in San Sebastian though that doesn't require us to have hostelling international cards.

We don't really want to buy a member ship card as this would likely be the only one time we'd use it!

Can anyone advise if there is another hostel/ albergue in San Sebastian (preferably a Pilgrim) one that we could stay in for the first night. If so do you also have contact details and directions etc?

Also as there's six of us we'd ideally like to book the 1st night here - do you know if that would be possible.

Any help would be really appreciated as at the moment we're really stuck for ideas - I've looked everywhere.

Finally does anyone know of a good map of the Camino del Norte? I've got the CSJ guide book but that doesn't seem to really include a good map!

Thansk in advance
Tanya

Hi Tanya

There is an alternative hostel but it is only open in July and August, try this websitehttp://www.caminosnorte.org/cnalbtabla.html. I didnt stay in any youth hostels but it may be possible to turn up and pay without a card, it would most likley cost a few Euro more.

This website gives you profile maps for the del nortehttp://www.mundicamino.com go onto the English option, and then pick the North Way and look at the 'line/ outline'.

Both of these websites give you the options via Oviedo, the CSJ giude takes you via Gijon. You may be able to find some maps from the tourist information for the Sebrayo/Gijon/Aviles section.

HI Mike,

Thanks for your reply.

I had found this hostel and it would be suitable as we are going the 1st week in August. However there doesn't appear to be any contact details for me to check if I can book in advance.

I've also read it can be very hard to find so if anyone has any directions (we'll be arriving in San Sebastian by bus) That would be very helpful!

Thanks alot
Tanya

I stayed at one of the youth hostels in San Sebastian (I dont' remember the name) and did not have a hostelling card...I think it cost maybe a euro or two more without the card but I was allowed to stay there. It seemed rather expensive to me though and it seems that other pilgrims who were not on their own were able to find pensions to stay in which would have been more economical (for a double or triple room). As I was on my own, my cheapest option was the bed at the hostel. I'm sorry I don't have any specific places to recommend.

Elevation map shows this is really steep! What’s the best way from downtown Hondarribia up there? Then wish me luck on the Purgatorio—I am a nervous wreck.
My group of six arrives in Irun on May 20 and we're starting our Camino on May 21. Since it's the beginning of the busy season, I'm wondering if we should order trekking poles from Amazon Espana...
