Places of interest after the Camino

I am planning to complete the Camino in May next year 2017, and have 3 weeks before I go back to work and would like some suggestions of places of interest where I can go. Would prefer to journey to Portugal then back to Italy for return flight .

Budget restrictions are not extreme.

Three weeks? How long is your Camino? Best to spend all the time on the Camino. Then there is Finisterre (another 3 days). Depending on where you fly to to Italy (e.g. via Madrid), you can rent a car one way and return it in Madrid. On the way visit Avila, Segovia, etc...

In 2012, after arriving in Santiago, four of us hired a car and drove Fisterra, Ourense, Salamanca, Granada (where I left the party) Valencia and dropped the car off in Barcelona.

As you anyway plan to go to Portugal, the city of Porto is a must-see. Buen Camino, SY

Loved Barcelona and I'm not really a fan of cities.

The geek in me loves the idea of walking from France to Santiago to Finesterre to Muxia to Santiago to Portugal.

I visited Spain through and through, and let me assure you that Barcelona is the place to visit. Especially considering that you can hike the Collserola and Garraf natural park immediately west and south of the city if you are looking for a breath of fresh air and a splendid view over the whole affair.

We enjoyed Portugal immensely, in particular Porto, Tomar (site of Templar castle) and Fatima.

I also agree that Porto is very much worth visiting, as is Lisbon if you can get down that far south. And - if you can swing it, Gibraltar is a hoot!

The Cies islands, as you will never go there again if not post Camino. Also Combarro. And why not A coruna and Lugo. Let's get real, you are most likely to visit Madrid, Segovia, Toledo, etc., regardless of the Camino than small gems such as Combaro and the Cies islands.

We plan to spend about 4 or 5 days post Camino Primitivo on Illa de Arousa in Galicia. Quaint little island that will give us access to explore other coastal regions as well as easy access to scuba diving. Last May we spent 3 weeks in the Andalusia region and I highly recommend that to anyone. You can see a lot in 3 weeks. Have fun planning!

Have you considered Malta ? I am biased , my ancestors are Maltese , it is a beautiful and civilised country . St John's in Valletta boasts the most amazing and accessible collection of paintings by Caravaggio in all of Europe .
English is a major second language , food is remarkable , populace is friendly . Very little crime , rubbish or graffiti either .

I have taken a bus between Santiago and Porto Portugal (less than a full day). Porto is great as are trips up the River to the wine growing region.

Also since you are doing a Camino, I must ask if it is for religious purposes? If so you might consider going to the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima in Portugal.

If not a religious emphasis, there are trains that take less than a full day from Porto to Lisbon and Lisbon is an absolute jewel of a city with lots to see and do.

I have only seen photos and heard of Cies from a volunteer at Pilgrim House called Gale. @natefaith above may be able to ask her where she stays when she goes, or perhaps they also have visited. Gorgeous pictures.
