poppies

A selection of Camino Jewellery
I know I always miss the poppies blooming in my garden in Andalucia when I walk in April/May time. The spectacular sight in ththe photo below was taken on the camino Portuguese, just south of Santarém in early May 2014.

Poppies are among the last of the Springtime flowers to bloom. Still too cold, give them another couple of weeks.

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

€46,-
We saw some in mid/late May but not massive fields of them as I had been expecting, and most of the ones we did see looked past their best so I wondered if we were a bit late. Also, they seemed sprinkled through the fields rather than huge sweeping expanses of them - perhaps I thought I was looking for tulips in the Netherlands.IMG_1199.JPG IMG_1350.JPG IMG_1045.JPG

When is the best time to see poppies on the Camino Frances?
We saw poppies in June near Haro walking to Santa Domingo from Irun in 2013. Also in May on CF. I was so amazed to see how common these special poppies are. Growing up as a kiwi they were available yearly as paper or cloth ones to be worn..on remembrance day. To see them naturally it all made sense of the significance of the emblem and was quite overwhelming.

Being from NZ you would be familiar with Anzac Day. We were on the Camino Frances last Anzac day and it was a pleasure to pick fresh poppies from the field for our Anzac day service in Los Arcos. One of the finest Anzac days I have ever had and I am a Veteran

Yes I think April/ May are your best bet - the better the weather the earlier and vice versa.

Surprisingly we had a late November bloom in London last November

As an old soldier my Camino(s) will continue to be part of my healing. I was lucky enough to get a pair of those poppies from the London Blood Swept Lands memorial, they are now a permanent fixture in my home.

Hi John, I too purchased some of these poppies, one for me and one each for my daughters and grandchildren. Visiting the Tower of London in September was one of the highlights of 2014, along with walking the camino Portuguese, and the birth of my granddaughter.
When are you off again? Only 12 days to go for me!
