When I took a tour of Santiago this summer the guide told me that they just opened it briefly after the restoration, and that they will be adding glass walls (or something) to protect the restoration work from the elements. Thanks @Stefystar - I'm really surprised to hear this, I thought they had just recently finished renovating it and had reopened it this summer 2018. I don't understand why they are closing it again... I couldn't find any articles about it in detail, but yes, i also saw it in the Galician news channel yesterday.
I waited in line 3 hours in AugustI can grasp a little Spanish so I heard while walking.. as they are closing the cathedral for restoration,( very needed I must say)
I was definetley not impressed by the use of security..I understand it has been a costly affair and 10 yrs ongoing but they forbid you to touch any of the surfices especially were pilgrims used to put they hand entering the p.da Gloria.
It was the first time I got to Santiago and able to enter the p. Da g., So I was a bit miffed by their stern approach to it.. pilgrims have a reverence for the cathedral.. I hope sincerely they will make a special pilgrims entrance fee.. when they reopen ..
But it ultimately I care for the Obradorio a great deal..I will pay what they ask
Have you managed to get in??
And from all of our hands. That indentation is a brilliant example of one hand being no big deal, but thousands having a huge effect.they will be adding glass walls (or something) to protect the restoration work from the elements.
You are respectful, but not everyone is. Just look at this.I was definetley not impressed by the use of security..I understand it has been a costly affair and 10 yrs ongoing but they forbid you to touch any of the surfices especially were pilgrims used to put they hand entering the p.da Gloria.
It seems I win’t Be able to walk fast enough to see it.Hi pilgrims,
Especially in Santiago today.
The portico da Gloria will close for the renovation they are planning I believe until november not sure if this coming one, to be honest
Anyway, until today it will be free.. when it will reopen there will be an entrance fee.
Cease your moment, I qued for 1.30 hrs... But it was lovely.
I expect the concern is that the act of repeatedly cleaning and replacing the protective surface you describe would itself eventually further wear down the stone. Heck, we know the kind of erosion just water is capable of producing over centuries.I don't see why they couldn't protect the stone at the hand indentation with something like floor wax that could be cleaned and replaced easily.
I got to see it Tuesday evening after a wait of 2.5 hours but worth the wait I felt privileged to see itHi pilgrims,

I think one has to accept that the Portico de la Gloria is now primarily an exceptional work of art and will be treated as such. There was apparently a similar discussion 10 years ago when the first protective measures were introduced. A member of the Cathedral said at the time [my free translation]: "I remember that as a young man, in the Vatican, we all approached and touched Michelangelo's Pietá. This is no longer possible and the world hasn't ended."I don't see why they couldn't protect the stone at the hand indentation with something like floor wax that could be cleaned and replaced easily.
