Portico De La Gloria

Time of past OR future Camino
Planning to walk 2016 or 2017
After a memorable and full filling Camino it was an emotional and overwhelming arrival in Santiago. Having explored the Cathedral, old town and museum, I was highly disappointed to discover that the Portico of Gloria is not accessible.....I didn't realise that the restoration to the main facade meant the main entrance is not available. What an anti climax....wish the various websites would have been clearer on that matter as to not disappointed pilgrim's expectation. I wonderful experience nonetheless but would have been the crowning glory.

You can always see the Portico de la Gloria cast at the V and A Museum in London and if nobody is looking you can still place your hand on the pillar and knock heads.

you're not the guy who wrote about being 'detained' by museum security in Bilbao are you?

I did exactly that a few years ago. About 5pm on a Friday is a good time to try; end-of-shift security handing over to the over-time guys. And if they pick you up on the cctv tell them you slipped and are definitely going to sue....

I hope this link works... http://www.vam.ac.uk/content/articles/t/the-cast-courts/

Edit: it does, sort of, scroll down for a view.

St James' Way - Self-guided 4-7 day Walking Packages, Reading to Southampton, 110 kms
The Cathedral was clear of scaffolding in 2012 and all pilgrims then were lucky enough to be able to touch the pillar, we were also allowed to take our packs into the Cathedral on our way to collect the compostella and security kindly kept an eye while we went to hug St James. Different times...in many ways.
