Rain on the Camino

When I did the Portuguese route last year it rained solid for 4 days. When I say it rained, I mean I walked for 4 days with it raining non stop the whole time. It resorted to my buying an umbrella and walking under it, (and I was not the only one doing it).

So does it rain much on other routes? I know Galicia in general can be unpredictable. I did get some rain on the frances, but not day after day.

One day I got caught in a thunder storm with no shelter and was completely soaked (before I bought an umbrella)

It really depends on way and time of the year - and your personal lack of luck ;-) Last year when walking from Prague to Santiago I had pretty much 6 weeks of non-stop rain. Keep calm and carry on. Buen Camino, SY

I walked from Ponferrada to Santiago in September and last three days were solid rain....

The first time I went to SDC in September 2011, I had 4 days of glorious sunshine.
On almost the same September days the following year, I had nothing but heavy rain.
You are either lucky or you are not.
It's still a wonderful place to go whatever the weather.

Too hot is also a problem. The rain was great for my feet, lot easier to way in low 20's rain than high 30s heat.

I walked Porto to Santiago at the end of March and over the 7 days there was not a hint of rain. There was even a mini heatwave with temperatures of 25 deg + around Padron.

In total with about 55 days on different Caminos (all March/ April / September) I reckon I had bad rain on of them on 3 of them and drizzly on/off stuff on another 5 or so.

As the others have mentioned I think luck plays a big part. As always hope of the best and prepare for the worst.

In May/June 2014 I spent 34 days walking from SJPP to Santiago, Finisterre and Muxia. I had just one and a half days of light rain.

This year again in May/June I spent 49 days walking the same route and finally walking back from Muxia to Santiago. Again only one and a half days of light rain.

I will be back in 2016, hoping for the same....

When are you starting?

I will be starting in SJPP on May 18th and plan to get to Santiago around June 19th before heading off to Muxia, Finisterre and then walking back to Santiago.

Hi Mike
I am leaving SJPP on 5 May so a couple of weeks ahead of you. I have plenty of time so will not be moving too quickly. I want to savour every moment. I plan on doing exactly the same walk as you. I will then catch a train to Barcelona where I will fly home to Sydney. I have left the ETD date open but it will probably be around end of June.

Sounds like a great plan Julie.

Although I am leaving SJPP on the 18th of May, I hope to be in Santiago on the 19th June then back there after the coast circuit on the 28th of June ready for my journey home on the 29th of June.

Not quite as lucky as Mike, I had 4 days of light rain in 42 days on CF Sept/Oct last year.

By May 30 you will have rain, but probably not enough to fret about.
I'd just wear trail runners and not worry about it.

Hi Dean,

May well see you somewhere as I plan to be walking through Burgos on the 30th May. Footwear is a very personal choice and we all have our own favourites. For me it will be my Merrel Moab mids. They are quite light and breathable with Goretex. I use insoles which are a bit more cushioned than those supplied with the boots though.
