Last minute planning on how to get back from the camino which will involve using the Regional Express/Media Distancia trains only.

There is a train from Puebla de Sanabria/Zamora which gets into Valladolid-Campo Grande at 09:55. My connection to Santander from Valladolid-Campo Grande leaves at 09:55. In the unlikely event of there being a delay to allow me to switch trains, what happens if you don't have a ticket? Can you buy one on board?

I'm sure I have seen the train inspectors/managers issuing tickets on board but just wanted to check there is no penalty.

The few times I have traveled via Renfe one had to have the ticket and show it before boarding. According to the website there does not seem to be an option to buy on the train, but you can buy at the station at a counter or kiosk. I've used the app or the website to buy mine.

I have traveled on Media Distance/Regional Express trains and you were allowed to buy a ticket on the train. Be aware though that this is one of the "discounted" currenly available to commuters and there have been cases where tickets were not available...check online first and make sure there are tickets available.

From my previous experiences with the Media Distance trains - buying in advance does get you both a discount and a choice of seats. Buying on the day means you pay full price and have to take whatever seat is available. As for on-time running, my experience is that both the Media Distance and the AVE operate very close to their time table "times", weather or track maintenance are about the only events that slow them down. Cheers

I've taken Renfe several times in the last two years, in different parts of Spain, and, FWIW, they are not likely to be on time.

My experience was totally different in that I took 15-20 RENFE trains last year and pretty much all were on time!

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
Thanks for all the replies. In checking further, there is a later train so I'll play safe rather than trying to make the change. Shame about the timing.

Normally if the train is not on time it will be announced in the station. I don't find a way to track trains online through the Renfe app though.

As regards finding the Arrivals/Departures information online, you need to use the Adif site as this (appears) to link to the station information e.g. Santiago today

Thanks! Valuable site for tracking in real time. Last summer we took the train about 10 different times and bought the Tarjeta Dorada for the Sr discount. Very helpful. Buen Camino and hope your trip home is smooth.
