Renting horses on the camino, how does it work?

I'm curious how the process works to rent horses to ride a part of the camino, or maybe a single day, like the climb to O'Cebreiro, for example.
I wonder where you leave your horses after the day and if there are things you need to consider if it's something you would like to do.

I haven't done it, but I believe that for the ride to O Cebreiro that the owner goes with you.

For Cebreiro you just call Victor, the guy in Hererrias who has the horses, the night before and tell him you'll be there next morning. He speaks some English. His posters are up in local bars.

It costs 35 + 5 for your backpack. It would be good to spend that evening in Las Hererrias so you're there and fresh at the right time.

At your own risk. First time I've ever ridden and it scared the bejeez...

I got to know the stable girl there who confirmed to me that they are very happy and well cared for.

I was wondering where you leave the horses after the day though? I imagine he has a building up there you need to ride to?

After taking pilgims up, the horses come back down. Almost got run over as the were running down.

There was a lady on a horse in the lead, but they were on their own spread out behind her.

The owner or his employee accompany the riders then take the horses back down.

Victor has 6 horses at Las Herrerias. The information is in the Brierley book. He will escort you up to O’Cebrerio and then spend time with you before returning back down the mountain. The day we did it there were 6 of us so Victor had to walk......no wonder he looks to be in such great shape. The horses are also well cared for- they are very precious to him. He is a very interesting person who speaks perfect English.
It takes about 2 hours to get to the top.

Victor had to walk or, at times run up the day I went up as he had rented out all the horses. He is great shape and very interesting to talk with. The horses were all getting new shoes the morning I rode up and looked well taken care of. We all sat and had drinks at the top. A great memory.

Wow, only 2 hours, that's good, compared to how long this day should be.

Horse riding is beginning to sound like a nice option against the Dragonte route!

I rode with Victor in May this year, very interesting gentleman....after October he winters the horses in La Faba and goes home to Madrid, where, apparently he works as an economist on contract.

That would not be me climbing that hill on foot in 2 hours - probably would have taken me all day!!!! - Victor's horses were a blessing.

Make sure your travel insurance covers horse riding. We had some Americans come through last week who had ridden from O Cebreiro, the horse one of them was riding dipped suddenly for a drink in a stream (really hot Saturday 30+ degrees) and took the rider, an experienced horseman, by surprise and they both went down. His wife told me he was bruised down the whole of one side from hip to shoulder.
