Rome to St. Jean de Pied de Port

Hi...my name's Carolyn and I'll be walking the Camino for the first time with my friend Jill in mid-October. I will be in Rome before the journey. Any suggestions on the best way to get from Rome to St. Jean? Is there a train route?

Well there is the train, but it is quite slow... you will at least loose one day. If you have never traveled in Europe before it might give you some nice views along the way, but it will take some time. More on the train here: http://www.trenitalia.com/

You could fly from Roma to Girona (Barcelona) with RyanAir (http://www.ryanair.com) or with Vueling (http://www.vueling.com). You can get a very good price with them if you book well ahead.

the best way is to walk; via the standard route Via Francigena over the Montgenevre pass to Arles will take a couple of months or so.

Going by train will take at least 2 days, via Florence, Genoa, Nice, Toulouse, Bayonne. Nice would be a convenient stopoff point - there are large numbers of hotels around the station. The N Italian coast is very scenic but unfortunately much of the railway line is in a tunnel so you don't see very much. If I were doing this trip I would take several days over it and see as much as possible. French railways site http://www.voyages-sncf.com/ better than Italian.

I don't think there are any air routes from Rome to anywhere near St Jean PdP, so flying would probably not be any quicker than going by train. Alternatively, forget St Jean PdP, fly Ryanair Rome-Santander, and use the coastal route from there to Santiago.

WALK! If you do not have time: there are a lots of airlines to choose from in Euope. Air Madrid flies from Rome (apparently 27 Euro if you bok early enough), then take a bus to Roncesvalles via Pamplona (inexpensive and on time), or find connection with Barcelona, or - in France - with Biarriz, where there is a train all the way to StJeanPied de Port.
