Seeking info on the Train from Santiago to Lisbon

Hi,
I searched in the forum but did not find any info on this train; I saw lots on a train from Santiago to Madrid but we fly in/our of Lisbon.

I googled and found this website to book a train. Is this the correct one? https://www.thetrainline.com/en-us/train-times/santiago-de-compostela-to-lisbon

It mentions average of over 10 hours, but can do it in 8+ hours on a faster train. But I'm not sure how you find the fast train?

Also, it says it's not direct and there are two "changes" where I assume you have to get off and back on another train. Is it easy to find the next train? My husband and I are notoriously bad for finding the right train platform and have twice gotten on the wrong train, ha ha! (you don't want to hear the end of those stories).

Oh, I didn't think about a bus! Interesting. I can look into that also. Makes sense about the two different rail services; may be complicated!

You can take a train to Vigo and then a train to Santiago. Or as was said a bus.

I did this in the other direction; bus from Santiago (Alsa) to Porto and then train to Lisbon. I booked the bus the day before (but it was covid times and november) and just bought a train ticket at the station in Porto.

The stops where you change trains are Vigo (ES) and Porto (PT). To reach Lisbon in one day it’s an early departure from Santiago; otherwise overnight in Porto. Although train travel is nicer than bus travel, the bus is more convenient in this case.

Exactly my answer, although I only took the bus to Porto and then the train (after a day or so in Porto).

Actually, I booked a train on thetrainline.com to Porto. Was able to get a 1:22 pm departure; 6:30 p.m. arrival. Am booking a place to stay that night in Porto and then got a train from Porto to the Lisbon Oriente station via rail.ninja, 3 hours 15 minutes and we will overnight in Lisbon before heading back to the states. So it worked out but was a lot of investigating! Thanks everyone for your suggestions!

I’ve taken the early morning train (currently 06:14) and the transfers in Vigo and Porto were not a problem. Given the length of the trip I finder the train nicer.

We booked tickets on www.thetrainline.com from Santiago to Porto for September 7. While we booked the trip in one place, as others said, it is actually two train tickets. Santiago de Compostela to Vigo Guixar which is Renfe regional and then Guilxar to Porto, which is Renge intercity. So if the first train is delayed, we could miss the next train but there is an hour and ten minutes between trains, so it should go well.
The Portugues trains are either inter-city or alfa pendular. The alfa pendular trains are the faster trains. If you book on the Portuguese train site Comboios de Portugal (www.cp.pt) in advance, the tickets are very inexpensive, for example as low as 9.5 euros from Porto to Lisbon. That's for 2nd class (turistica) and intercity. The maximum time ahead you can book is 60 days.

Ok, thank you for that information! That is good to know we have to be aware about the possibility of missing the 2nd train; I did see the stop. I just hope we can figure out where to go to catch the 2nd train, ha!

Rome2rio is a great (free) app which quickly, easily shows how to get from A to B via a variety of transports: plane, train, bus, limo, car, ferry, etc. For each option, it estimates time and cost. Wonderful for general planning regarding which modes of transport are available/interesting.

It works in tiny and large towns around the world. In this particular instance, it would have brought buses into the realm of possibility for Santiago to Lisboa.

Fwiw, I always make my reservations with direct carriers after I've decided which mode best fits my trip.

It is more expensive but you could also fly from Santiago to Lisbon. The flight that I looked at makes a short stop in Porto, but gets you into Lisbon in about 3 hours.
