So I booked my flight to Paris for September 25 - arriving Sept 26 and taking a train to SJPP on the 27th to start walking on the 28th.

How peculiar that L'esprit du Chemin closes its season the day I arrive in St Jean!!

What is the next best place to stay in SJ?

Thanks

3rd Edition. More content, training & pack guides avoid common mistakes, bed bugs etc
Hello Justine,
Another option you may want to consider, depending upon what time you will be arriving in SJPP, is the possibility of going part way up the mountain on that first day. There are two albergues : the first is Ferme Ithurbia at Huntto (Tel: (0033) - 0559 37 11 17.) - which is approx. 5 km on the way to Santiago and the second is Auberge Orisson (Tel: (0033) - 0559 49 13 03) which is approx. 10 km from SJPP. Both are private albergues which charge approximately 30 Euros per night - which includes dinner and breakfast. I've stayed at both places and they sure take a nice bite out of your following day.
If you do decide to do this, try to make reservations ahead of time or if not, check in at the Pilgrims' Office in SJPP. In my experience they prefer to phone up for you to be sure there is a place available.
Buen camino!

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
