Time of past OR future Camino
future- Spring 2024
Hi, this will be our first Camino. Should we expect a couple of cold, rainy days climbing the Pyrenees mid April? I’ve got layers and rain/wind coat but not down parka!

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

The reopening of the Route Napoleon was delayed by several days in April this year because of snow. That could easily happen again next year and snow is possible well into April in the higher sections. Unlikely to need a down parka but several layers and an effective wind and waterproof jacket are a necessary precaution. Too many people each year are rescued by the local bomberos suffering from hypothermia.

Weather is unpredictable! We started at SJPDP on April 18 this year. That day was fairly warm as we headed to Borda. But the next day, as we climbed to the peak, it was windy and cold (but sunny). I got sunburned the following day, en route to Zubiri. We were prepared with layers, like you, and it was fine. Buen camino!

First, welcome to the forum!
Whether the Napoleon route is open in early April is entirely down to luck. It was closed on April 8th in 2016 when my wife and I left SJPP that day due to heavy snow.
We walked the optional Valcarlos route and still ended up in heavy snow as we approached Roncesvales.
I think people get too caught up in thinking their Camino is ruined if they miss the Napoleon route. It is only one day out of many.
It in regards to gear. Layers are the way to go, leave the down jacket at home.
You will find the exertion of walking keeps you warm and you will likely be surprised after walking awhile each day how few layers you actually need to stay warm. Layers allow you to tailor what you need for the conditions.
A rain poncho is good to have as is a knitted style ski cap and gloves. A warm head and hands are key to staying warm in less than ideal conditions.
Don't over pack!
The ounces add up and the weight you carry begins to take a toll on you day by day. Less really is more!

I carry a lightweight down "puffy jacket". Great on a cold morning until walking warms me up. Delightful on a cool evening in the Plaza for la cena con vino. Buen Camino

What layers do you have? I walked the Napoleon route mid May this year, and it was cold with heavy rain. I was happy to have my ultralight down jacket the first few days, but then it didn't come out of my pack for the following four weeks. I would definitely take it for an April start.
