Starting in Astorga, can I get a Passport there ??

Wondering about Passports...
If we start in Astorga, do the Alberque's there issue Passports ??

Hello Harry,
Many albergues have credenciales and you can obtain one from them. You need your passport information at the time of issue. I'm not sure what country you are in ... but I think the UK, and you could obtain one from the CSJ prior to your departure. Then you will "have it in hand" and ready. Some people also get it stamped by their local chruch ... You can probably get one at the Cathedral in Astorga as well.

You should be able to find a credential in Astorga...but to be on the safe side, you might consider getting one prior to your trip - the Confraternity of St James in England and the American Pilgrims on the Camino are two organizations that will send credentials by mail.

The most important towns in the Camino gives you the option to obtain the credential. May be in the Cathedral or in any albergue.

If you arrive to Madrid, you can obtain it in the Iglesia de Santiago and in the Associacion of Madrid, c/ Carretas, 13, 7º, tuesdays and thursdays 19:00 - 21:00

I had heard at one time that to get your compostela you would need an "official credential" from Spain. I don't know if this has really turned out to be the case or not. Perhaps someone knows for sure.

Where is the best place in Pamplona to obtain the passport? Are the passports all pretty much the same...or or some more elaborate?

From January 2009, only one credential printed in Spain - the official Spanish pilgrims' passport - - printed and distributed in by the Santiago Archdiocese will be accepted by the Pilgrim's Office. This is to stop the printing of credentials by tour group operators, travel agencies etc inside Spain. Credentials issued by bona fide St James associations in other countries will also be accepted.

This is the official Spanish Credential - it is a concertina type card with squares to place the stamps (sellos) which you present at the pilgrims office in Santiago for a Compostela. There is another certificate issued to pilgrims who do not walk for religious/spiritual reasons:

Thanks for the clarification. I am assuming that the American Friends of the Camino, CSJ and all of the other country organization will be able to provide appropriate credentials.

Can this credential be obtained in Pamplona? I would assume at the Cathedral, but are there other locations? Is there a listing somewhere with times, etc?

You can also get it from the albergues and, sometimes, from the police station!
I don't think that there a specific list but if you go to the albergue close to the cathedral, you'll be able to get one there.

Since we are flying into Santiago, then busing to our starting place (maybe Leon or Astorga or Sevilla) ... is it possible to get a passport in Santiago?

Hi Annie,
You cannot get a credencial at the Pilgrim office in Santiago. Since it is the traditional "ending" place , not the "starting" place, they do not issue them. I learned this when I went there with a friend last year who wanted to obtain one in order to walk the Muxía/Fisterra route beginning in Santiago. They told her to obtain it from the first alberguein which she stayed along the Way.
You can obtain your credencial in Astorga, Leon orn Sevilla. Probably at the Cathedrals or albergues in all three cities.

Well too bad. We will have our official passport from here, but I love the looks of the Spanish one. Maybe I can pick it up in Leon or Astorga. Thanks!
