Starting in Coimbra

Hi folks, I am a first timer and with three weeks freed up I plan to walk from Coimbra to Santiago. I will be doing it alone in July. Can anyone advise if I can get a credencial in Coimbra and is it advisable to advance book for the stages before Porto? Thanks. This site is most useful.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Hola Noel

Funnily enough someone asked the same question only a few weeks ago. You won't get a Credencial in Coimbra - where are you flying into? If it is Oporto you will get on in the Cathedral and similarly in Lisboa.

There won't be many other pilgrims so booking may not be necessary but is perhaps advisable a day ahead or so?

Regards

John

John thank you for that. If I get my credencial in Ireland before leaving does that mean that the stage from Coimbra to Porto will not be counted? I have three weeks so wanted to a little more than just Porto to Santiago.

Noel - the only thing that will be "counted" towards getting the Compostela, if that is important to you, is the last 100 kms from Santiago. If where you start is farther than that then collecting sellos is a good way of remembering your journey. A credencial is needed if you wish to use albergues along the way.

Best wishes

John
