Tears on the Camino

Time of past OR future Camino
April 2013
Today, Louise and I had to leave the Camino because very unexpectedly her father in law was given a short time to live. We had walked just two days short of half way, met the most amazing people, walked in minus 2 degrees and over 30 degrees. We have shed many tears not only for Donald but for our loss of the wonderful experience . Everyone we met could have provided enough life experiences for a film like The Way. We will walk again starting in September and finish our journey. To catch the laughs rather than the tears check out the blog so far. Walkthecamino.wordpress.com we will resume in September when we hope to have a Camino without tears x Sarah

Sorry for the pain you are feeling in this sudden turn of events. Trust you will have a special time with him.

Sarah, coming back to the Camino, especially to the very spot you left off, is an absolute thrill. When you guys are a bit over your grief, you have a real treat in store. My first phase was from Le Puy to Pamplona. Returning to Pamplona the next year, to the very same hotel, was a special Camino experience on its own.

You'll see!

Ideal pocket guides for during & after your Camino. Each weighs only 1.4 oz (40g)!
So sorry to read why your having to leave (for now) The Camino will, as they always say, be there waiting for you. I think it might also be a wonderful way to heal afterwards. Peace, Karin

Thank you all for your kind words. Donald passed away just a few hours ago so Louise was able to say goodbye. Today I bought three hand painted pebbles with birds on , one for Donald and one each for Louise and I to take in September. Louise took her original pebble to the hospital today (that we never got the chance to leave) to show to Donald just before he died.

You guys will be so glad you made the right decision to put your own wishes aside.
May you be comforted as you walk again and find healing.

Can I just tell you a little camino story.
We met an older couple one morning on our camino - a Basque brother and sister. When the sister realised we had eight kids she jumped up and down and hugged and kissed us and spoke rapidly - words for which we did not need the brother's interpreting! She was so amazingly full of joy. That was nice. What was incredibly touching was that when we met them again a few hours later they stopped us to say *thank you*. You see, when we met them they had just had a call from family telling them of their brother-in-law's death. They thanked us for showing them that life goes on, just by being there, us three generations. I cried at how they were so joyful for us in the midst of their own intense grief. We met again up at the Cruz de Ferro and then enjoyed a few meals with them. She kept giving the children chocolate and told them that "fathers are for educating their children and grandmas are for giving chocolate". Our kids came home with a Spanish Grandma. And all that time they were grieving. We are still in contact today.
I hope that you are gifted some equally special memories and that you can be a comfort to your friend as you walk through the darkness together.

Thank you Rachael and to everyone who has sent their kind thoughts. We are in contact with people who are still walking and some who have returned....all part of the Camino family and a great comfort to Louise and her family.
Regards Sarah

So glad you did get home in time to say goodbye.
Our loving prayers are with you
