Temps late April and through May

I have tried to search this and keep being told that it is too common to be searched :shock:

So I'm trying to get an idea of what the temps are in late April and through May. We arrive in SJPDP on 21 April.

Sandi - you could experience snow right up to the end of April - or you could have the most beautiful weather. Once the snows have gone, the rains come and with the rains, mud and slush! But, you won't be lonely. The graph on the St Jean Pilgrims' Office website shows two high seasons. One from 23 April to mid May with a very high peak from 7 to May 13. (1668 pilgrims in 7 days, an average 238 pilgrims per day).

Others have sent you "real data"
Here is a weather anecdote of what might be extreme weather.

On May 1 of 2004 O'Cebreiro received 3 or 4 inches of wet snow. It was one of those days when a pilgrim's true grit is tested.

Otherwise, April and May that year were pretty nice. Cool in the early morning so having gloves was nice. Warm in the afternoon, and about 5 days of rain in the whole month.

Hi, Sandi,

I'll just second the gloves idea. I usually walk in May and have never been sorry to have had them along. I bring a small pair of lambswool gloves and can't tell you the number of times they have saved me from real discomfort -- both early in the morning and during those 8 hour days of walking in the rain. There are few things more chilling than a steady cold rain, and the insulation power of wool (even when totally wet) on the hands has really helped me keep going. My walking partner used to just use an extra pair of socks as her substitute gloves, but saw some cheap lambswool gloves at Heathrow on her way home from one camino and has never regretted buying them. I know it's all about choices and pack weight, but for me those gloves are essential. I'll even be bringing them to Sevilla with me in May, though I don't expect to use them much on the Vdlp!
