Pilgrimage is of all people, faiths, sferes and ages - for hunters, gatherers and smorgasbordians:

Hi there!

Please let me introduce myself:

This week I was very happy to discover this beautiful site and to read the comments of Veteran Poster sillydoll who was so kind to write regarding ā€œKing's 1920 classic now onlineā€ on 14 Jan 2008, 17:27 'There is also a Blog devoted to her at: http://king-early-days.blogspot.com. And devoted I am!

For me it all started some 20 years ago with the making of the second leg (the first begins in Amsterdam) of the Dutch ā€œPelgrimspadā€ * from ā€˜s-Hertogenbosch (Bois-le-Duc in Dutch Brabant) to VisĆ©, just across the Belgian border near Maastricht. In those beautiful days I worked as a professional pilgrim in the Royal Dutch Touring Club ANWB [our AA or AAA].

After making the route description in the walking guide * in 1979 I was asked to develop this long distance walk into a true Pilgrimā€™s Path leading to the next pilgrim's routes to Santiago de Compostela through Belgium and France. It was opened in 1983 under the auspices of the ā€œCouncil of Europe, Cultural Routesā€. After my first travel to Santiago as a tourist in 1988 the reading of Ms Kingā€™s masterpiece changed my life.

In Holland we observe with great interest the revival of Ms King's classic ā€˜The Way of Saint Jamesā€™ and I do my share on my website http://www.pelgrimspaden.nl in seven weblogs now (more are to follow):
http://king-early-days.blogspot.com in English and the following in Dutch:
http://king-renaissance.blogspot.com
http://pilgrimsplaza-king-index.blogspot.com full text index
http://pilgrimsplaza-king-1.blogspot.com
http://pilgrimsplaza-traplepuy.blogspot.com
http://pilgrimsplaza-king3.blogspot.com with a review in English
http://pilgrimsplaza-ramiro-1.blogspot.com on Ramiro strip books (comics)!

and I just found this for quick and easy browsing through all flat texts of The Way of Saint James:
http://elcaminosantiago.com/PDF/Way_of_ ... mes_01.txt - Volume I
http://elcaminosantiago.com/PDF/Way_of_ ... mes_02.txt - Volume II
http://elcaminosantiago.com/PDF/Way_of_ ... mes_03.txt - Volume III

On my homepage http://pilgrimsplaza.blogspot.com I describe under ā€œIk zie, ik zie, wat gij niet ziet...!?ā€ (I spy with my little eye...) the discovery in the PĆ³rtico de la Gloria of a great little secret concerning the apostel's twin aspects. After sitting in the narthex for about an hour with my back against the wall Master Matthew's simpel and clear stone bible message hit me hard! Has anyone else seen it yet?

Half a dozen pilgrim friends have already contributed a dozen reviews and we invite you to join the club. The new reprints create a wonderful opportunity! Youā€™ll find my mail address in the first Comment under each blog.

Yours,

Geert Bakker

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Aangename kennis Geert!
It's good to have the owner of those wonderful blogs in our 'cyber albergue'.
Please tell us the Master's secret!

Hi Geert,

I meet you everywhere........... :D

Greetings,

Paul Lanfermeijer

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Nice to meet you too Sil! I'm very greatful that you drew my attention to this warm place of welcome and hospitality where I already feel very much at home. Looking from the continent you were the first 'foreigner' to do so, so you're not that 'silly' as your chosen name might suggest!

In fact I admire your great "en-thou"-siasm (which in this connection boils down to the same inspiration and spirituality) to keep on after so many (1300!) contributions giving people a feeling that their effort is appreciated, which is a great comfort on the internet! And to meet on this site a few minutes later Paulus whom in a former life I have known for many years was also a big and nice surprise; it's a small world!

Regarding what I called Master Matthew's secret I must tell you however that I promised a few of my Dutch pilgrim friends a fine lunch if and when they would confirm what there is to see so I can't disclose it in public without becoming a spoil-sport. Also I must confess that for me these are unfamiliar grounds so I'd rather not speculate more in these serious matters as long as there are many experts around and we may hope for their expertise. Overhere no one has reported for duty yet!

Still I do have a hunch what it could mean but that I already disclosed on my homepage (click on the picture to enlarge it to see the page number) under "Ik zie, ik zie, wat jij niet ziet..." which is an old nursery rhyme like: "I spy with my little eye..." It has to do with mystic and mysterious twin aspects (and facts?) of life as you can read full text on the internet now in Ms King's chapter The Mortal Twin and elsewhere.

I'm hoping to achieve more understanding myself this summer when I read Volume 2 on the beach near my house. I'm used to go there every day weather permitting and it's a good place because reading King you need a broad view. Last year I finished Volume 1 and Volume 3 is planned for next year; you see I like to savour it for a nice long time.

That lunch invitation goes for you too when you are in Holland!
I hope this has made you and a few other true pilgrims curious!
Yours,
Geert

Hi Paul,

Nice to meet you here too! It's a small world indeed!
Congratulations with you new home! Nice place too!

I found some good pictures of Vezelay but couldn't find an explanation of "la colline eternelle" on:

http://vrcoll.fa.pitt.edu/medart/menufr ... pmain.html
http://route.scouts-europe.org/La-Colline-eternelle
http://jlhuss.blog.lemonde.fr/jlhuss/20 ... ecy_e.html (very nice fotoā€™s)
http://www.koodji.com/view/46/la-colline-eternelle video (good music)
http://gite298.free.fr/allemand/bourgogne/vezelay.htm

The word eternelle was often mentioned but never explained so I hope you'll pick it up some day!

All the best and greetings!
Geert

Ps: I'm not sure I pressed the wright buttons for answering you and sillydoll; can you help please?

Geert,

la Colline Ć©ternelle = de eeuwige heuvel? the eternal hill of Vezelay?

Jan Brilleman

Hi Jan,
Nice to meet you here!
We wonder why only this (as far as I know!) rather small hill is called Ć©ternelle?
Evidently it is old and it has an interesting history but why label only this one?
Clavijo and Hamburger Hill we understand, but this enigma is fascinating!
Please keep us posted when you find any answer!
Greetings,
Geert

post introduction

Yesterday I posted this message (kindly translated by my good friend Marcel van Huystee -see his review of The Way of Saint James on this forum) on http://es.groups.yahoo.com/group/camino ... o/messages where the subjects we're speciallly interested in are also discussed intensely. Of course a good reason to learn Spanish (Catalan and Galician?) asap. In the meantime I found this translation tool Altavista Bable Fish on http://babelfish.altavista.com. Any other tips? Thank you!

Message to all pilgrim friends:

April 24th 2008

Dear Pilgrims:

Thank you for your kind E-mail messages, regarding the book ā€œThe Way of Saint Jamesā€ by the author Ms Georgiana Goddard King. I was very pleased with your reactions about that book and the other topics ā€œThe Santiago Enigmaā€ and ā€œThe PĆ³rtico de la Gloriaā€.

However, I have a problem, because I cannot speak Spanish fluently and I am therefore limited to English, French, German or my native tongue, Dutch.

In the meantime, the amount of messages is growing fast and at present translations by an interpretor are not feasable.

I hope you understand the problem and I trust that we can still continue to communicate.

Kind regards,
Geert Bakker
