Anyone any experience of any of these routes https://camminomaterano.it/ ? The Beloved and I plan to be in Puglia and southern Italy for a few weeks in Spring. The route from Bari to Matera looks a possible delight and the rock-cut churches of the Sassi well worth exploring.

We'll be mainly exploring the heel, sole and toe of Italy on trains & buses but a little walking wouldn't go amiss. The suggestions of any here who have hiked there would be most welcome

More than 40 years ago while I was wandering about the Bari/Brindisi area on a Vespa one architectural delight of many was discovering the delightful stone trullo. vernacular structures near Bâri.

Thank you Margaret. We are hoping to spend a night or two in a truli - though most, these days, seem to come with hot-tubs and maid service. Plan to be down that way in May on the Via Appia with my son. Look forward to your report and if those rail lines run regularly.

I was lucky to visit Matera many years ago on a recommendation from an Italian friend of mine when I lived in Napoli. This was before it got redeveloped and it was a fascinating place. if you get the opportunity take a walk along the ravine on the NE corner from the town. There are some fascinating little churches and other structures there that were totally unmarked when I visited. However, the river running through it was a mess….

Haven't done the trail, but have visited Matera. Absolutely loved it. Our plan was to make it a base for a few days while we explored the area, but we were enjoying ourselves so much, that we just stayed in town and explored. It's nothing like any place I've been before.

Also had an opportunity to stay in a farm with Trullis. As you mention, it was a luxury experience, but that's what we were looking for, so we loved it. We stayed near a hill town called "Locorotondo." Had never heard of it before we visited, but we loved that as well.
