Does anyone know if there are walking poles or staffs available in St. Jean to purchase?

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Hi Maggie and welcome, yes there are afew hiking gear shops in St Jean where they are sold. I would advise two hiking poles, they will help you a lot on the a hills for climbing and decending.
Buen Camino.

They are available, however I suggest you practice walk using poles or staff before leaving home, lest you purchase and carry equipment that you are unfamiliar with. (Disregard, if you are a pole user who just doesn't want to travel with them )

As Newfydog recently posted....Costco currently has a "decent" pair of carbon poles for sale now as of (April 18/2015)
I checked them out and bought a couple of pairs for my grandsons who are going with me this year (June). I would use them without a second thought if I did not already have a long used set that I favor.

They are fine and light weight. They telescope down short enough to fit inside of most packs for carry-on.
The cost is $29.95 which is better than I have ever seen for decent quality poles. Much higher in SJPP or in Spain.

The price (to me) means that I would not have to look after them as closely as the more expensive ones (like mine). Not a huge loss if they don't make it with you to Spain or get lost along the way.

Worth a look if you have a Costco nearby.
Like everything at Costco....they will probably only be available until the current stock gets sold out.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
