Want to do the Camino with my Dad - need some advice!

Hey guys

I'm going to surprise my dad and do the Camino del Norte with him. I'm wondering home much, roughly, I'll need to do the Camino (each person, minus flights)? I think we'll be there for a month or so..

When is the best time to go? I know that the Spanish summer gets pretty hot.

Thanks so much!

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Hola - welcome to the forum. What a fabulous surprise for your Dad.

Timing first of all - it is really up to you. Walking in the North of Spain there isn't the searing heat of the South in the summer. However it can still get pretty hot. You may wish to avoid July/August for this reason - these are also the busiest months with other pilgrims.

Cost - you can work out your own budget and there are lots of posts on this site on this subject. Your expenditure on the route will be on accommodation and food - both are easy to work out. If you want to prepare your own food or at least carry lunch with you you can do so for a few euros. Many places offer breakfast of juice, coffee and toast for around 2 - 3 euros. You will also enjoy the Spanish practice of providing Menus del Dia - 3 courses + bread + wine for 8 - 12 euros - on the camino routes many places also offer cheaper Menu del Peregrino options. Accommodation - albergues - budget 5€, hostals budget 15 - 20€ per person if sharing and hotels upwards depending on the quality.

Let us know how the surprise goes!

Hi Michael,

I walked the Norte for the most of July in 2010, the temps. ranged from about 75 to 85 with lots of cloud- perfect walking weather.Hostals varied from Donativo to about 6 euros and single hotel rooms seemed to go from 20 to 35 euros, friends who were staying in double rooms paid around 45 euros or less.

These 2 websites can give you details on distances and accommodations http://www.mundicamino.com and http://www.caminodesantiago.consumer.es

Goodluck

Hi Michael

I wouldn't advise going in the "peak" season; mid - late july and early to mid august.

The albergues (an alternative accommodation) tend to be very busy during that period.

Good Luck !
