Where to leave the car?

It looks like I'll be able to get a week for the Camino Ingles in August or Sept. Only problem is, I will have a car with me. Would you recommend parking in Santiago and taking the bus up to El Ferrol, or would it be smarter to park it in Ferrol? Would we need to leave it in a parking garage, and if so, do you have any idea of the cost for a week? Any advice or suggestions most welcome. Thanks, Laurie

Hi Laurie,

I think I would park the car in Santiago and take the bus up to Ferrol, but I think you could do it either way. For me I think it would be good to have the car there once I finished, and not have to "travel" to pick it up, but either way I think it would work.

If you would like to park it in Santiago, the only long term parking that I know of is about 1-2KM from the airport. Have a look here:

.. the airport is about 15 minutes by car outside town.

The alternative would be to park it in Santiago, in a regular underground parking. I would consider this safe, but it may be a bit pricy. I wish I remembered the prices, but I would guess about €20/day (pluss-minus some euros). One good (24 hour) parking is this one.

In the city center all streets have meters, so leaving it there would not be an option. Even the university campus now have the meters, so leaving it there would not work either.

Thanks so much, Ivar. This forum works fast! I emailed the long term parking place and they responded almost instantaneously. 6E a day for the first couple of days, then it goes down to 5E a day. A good alternative to the in-town parking garages. Thanks again.

Hi,

Does anyone know if the long-term parking near the airport is still the cheapest most secure option for leaving a car for a week or so or are there other options now in the city for long term parking?

There is a Municipal parking (24h) here:

... that I have starte to use when I go into town. But I think (not 100% sure) that it is about 10-11 euro per day. As you can see it is not underground, but open air (can get warm in summer).

I think the one at the airport is still the best option...

Hi

Have you heard of the parking on Avenida de Xoán XXIII, and is below the coach parking area. It is no more than 500 metres away from the front of the cathedral? If so, would you know how much this one is?

I tried looking at the link above for long term parking but it doesn't work. Anyone have any new ideas?

This might be an alternative... it is a bit outside of town (30 min walking from cathedral... not far from where the Camino Portugues comes in)

..but it is free parking (subsidised by the Municipality of Santiago). I have not parked here myself, so I have not experience.. but it looks safe...

Gosh! I knew you had your car, but didn’t think about the cost of parking, and add to that the petrol, and your lodgings for 3 nights, coming and going. A serious investment, but for the best cause: helping peregrinos. Muy bien hecho, Peter!

It's not as bad as it sounds.
The first night before and after the two weeks of voluntering is paid by the Dutch Jacobus association . I drive a lease car so the petrol cost is not on my account for about 80%.The sleep overs to and from Santiago the most of it I can get back true my tax return because I'am doing voluntering work. Thats not so bad is it.
