Recent Camino pilgrim deaths- August 2018

Time of past OR future Camino
Recent:Norte/Muxia- Spring '23
MadridWay- Fall '23
I've recently read on the forum of two deaths. One was a German man and the other a man from Brazil. I was wondering if anyone knows if either of these unfortunate deaths were related to the recent heat waves.

Down bag (90/10 duvet) of 700 fills with 180 g (6.34 ounces) of filling. Mummy-shaped structure, ideal when you are looking for lightness with great heating performance.

€149,-
The family believes the Brazilian one died due to the heat wave too. He was found 30km ahead of Pamplona.
He was a member of the Friends of Saint James Association in his state, in South Brazil, who provided his credential, and all his fellow pilgrims are deeply saddened :(
The family is on route to Spain for funeral arrangements.

This happened near Izco. I wonder whether this is where the Brazilian man had intended to stop, but was forced to continue because the albergue was closed? Am doing the same route next week, very conscious that accommodaton on the ARagones cannot be taken for granted - and that distances can be long for elderly or those not so fit.

The reports of the death of the German pilgrim on the Via de la Plata at the weekend also make the point that the albergue at the Alcantara reservoir was closed and the pilgrim had been walking a further 11km to Canaveral. A very long day in a remote area without water most of the way and very little shade. These less popular routes can be very different from the Camino Frances and far more demanding - something not always fully understood.

Very true, Bradypus. I remember walking the full 31.5 km in April/May, and it was tough - even without the extreme heat. I had lunch on a hill in full sun because there was virtually no shelter to be found. There were also parts that weren't well marked, making it easy to get lost. Sometimes the best option is to take a taxi, as many I know did that day.

This just breaks my heart.

My sympathy to the two pilgrims and their families. Well, when I start walking in October I shall see if I'm as healthy as I think I am....

Terrible news. If heat related it stresses the point to stay well hydrated. Carry those water bottles Camino friends!!!

Its the saddest thing. Such a waste. I can only imagine how devastated their families are.
I leave in ten days and I sure am hoping it cools off some.

I’m doing my first Camino next week. As a Texan forced to train in the Texas heat, I carry a 2 liter water bladder and always wear a hat. This way the water is always convenient and the sun is off my head. Also If you wait until you at thirsty, you are already on the road to dehydration.
