    Piecemeal camino question

If you had 6 days I would say Astorga, because I loved it there! The Gronze website shows starting in Foncebadon will get you to Sarriai in 5 stages. Astorga is easy to get to by train, and I'm sure you could bus it to Foncebadon. If you want to try another Camino, the entire Camino Ingles...

    Anybody use speedgoats?

Wore hightop Speedgoats on a short Camino and then a 100-mile through hike closer to home. Performed great on both.

Am I the only one perplexed by WhatsApp?

Have you tried texting instead of calling on WhatsApp? When I need to reach hotels or pensions in Spain I text them on WhatsApp and normally receive a prompt reply.

Just started El Camino Vasco del Interior.

Awesome! Looking forward to hearing about your journey. I walked it in December and did not see a single pilgrim, but still had a great time. Your weather looks good for this week.

    Vasco in December

Thanks! I ended up using the Mapy.cz app and it was perfect for my needs.

    My Camino Vasco

Yes, that is exactly where it is. I had a few falls in that section, which is more falls than I have had in my entire prior 30 years of hiking:). I was a muddy mess when I finally got to pavement, but no injuries. Sorry for your fall, in my research I hadn't heard anyone else mention this...

    My Camino Vasco

Oh, the albergue could have been open, I meant nothing else open for the locals. Seemed like the entire town was hanging out at Ostatu Zegama and I did not see anything else open in town, but I did not look for the albergue. My meal at the Ostatu was wonderful also!

    My Camino Vasco

Day 5 Zegama to Salvatierra / Agurain This day was the reason I wanted to walk the Vasco and that was to walk through the San Adrain Tunnel. I waited until 9:00am to start so I could visit the local supermarket for some provisions as there is no services for the first 10 miles or so for the...

    My Camino Vasco

I recently had a free week while on vacation in Spain and decided to walk part of the Camino Vasco from Irun to Vitoria-Gasteiz. I walked for 6 days starting at the end of November and stayed in private rooms along the way. The Vasco had some of the most beautiful landscapes I have seen on any...

    Small Folding Knife - Buses/Trains in 2024

I always travel with an Opinel knife in Spain. I don't remember any luggage scanners or metal detectors at bus stations, and have ridden on numerous buses with the knife in my pocket. The bigger train stations have scanners and detectors, I just throw the knife in my pack and it's never been...

LIVE from the Camino A and B on the Via de Bayona

Can't wait to hear how you guys get on. Between Beasain- Zegama and also coming down from San Adrian tunnel were my worst slippery and muddy parts in December. Looking forward to hearing about your experience. Great times, but I definitely won't be going back to the Vasco in the winter.

Altra Olympus 5 Hike Mid GTX - first impressions

It was a great Camino and I ended up wearing my Hokas. Had rain most days, but it was a light rain. Not much mud and the walk was on pretty easy terrain. I walked the week before "Holy Week" and it was very quiet. I saw about 6 other pilgrims every day on the trail but even less in town...

LIVE from the Camino A and B on the Via de Bayona

I hear you! The wind on the walk up to San Adrian Tunnel was brutal. I had my eyes on the trees, ready to dodge any that came down. Luckily none did, it was just cold!

LIVE from the Camino A and B on the Via de Bayona

Can't wait to hear more about your trip! I did the Vasco in December in the rain, and it was very muddy and slippery (especially between Beasain-Zegama).

    Accommodation in Sarria

I've stayed at: Hotel Alfonso IX DP Cristal Pension Escalinata And I would rank them in that order of preference.

    Topo Wearers!

Yes, for me it's been the same size for Altra Lone Peaks, Olympus 5s, and Topo Ultraventures. I size up a 1/2 size for Caminos compared to local hiking.

    Topo Wearers!

No slip issues for me. Not as aggressive as the Speedboat but plenty of grip for a summer Camino.

    Topo Wearers!

I really love my Topo Ultraventure 3s for my local hikes. I was torn on what to bring on a recent short Camino (Vasco) and ended up going with my Hoka Challengers because they are waterproof and rain was forecast everyday. I regretted it after the first day and will go with Topos going...

    Santiago to valenca/tui

I've been looking at that too. Another option. Looks like Renfe train to Vigo then transfer trains to Guillarey (Guillarei) gets you within 3 miles ay Tui.

    Camino Vasco

I just walked Irun to Vitoria-Gasteiz Dec 2023. A great walk, but super muddy and slick in the winter. I did not see any other pilgrims, and a local walker told me he hadn't seen one in over a month. I will post a recap of my 6 days soon.
