O Cebreiro is harder if it's at the end of a day IMHO. The weather can play a part of course
I've gone Trabadelo to Fonfria, Trabadelo to Filoval and last time '22 VDB to Fonfria all in busy Septembers without booking
If you have time constraints or O Cebreiro causes concern, you could always...
Personally I used to take convertible pants, but now only long light weight hiking pants. Keeps dust out of shoes, and after hot summer it WILL be dusty. Obviates sunscreen on legs. If I want shorts, I just roll them up and safety pin them. Lighter, cheaper and easier to wash than convertibles
My wife and I splurged on Fjallraven hiking shorts and pants. Each time we hiked Camino Frances (4 times) from mid-September to late October, we alternated between shorts and pants and this worked well for us. Never know what the weather will be like, but hiking in shorts in sun or rain was...

Consider Burgos to Leon on the French Way. That is 8 stages ranging from 19 to 27 km each day. Burgos Cathedral is a must see. If you find 8 days too many you can catch the train from Sahagun to Leon ( half way between Terradillos and Bercianos) or to your airport of exit. Sahagun has...
I'm currently refining my packing list for the Camino Frances, starting in SJPDP on September 24, and walking through to the end of October/beginning of November. While I understand that the weather is varied and unpredictable, in your experience(s), is it worth bringing a pair of shorts for...
I agree. My third trek on that section was September 2023 at 73 years old. As hard as it is, the beauty of the rock formations and the trail should be preserved. Slow and thoughtful when you take on this section is the key.
Hi there,
Not sure where to post this so please move as best.
I am looking forward to walking for a week on one of the Camino stages in September due have no idea which would be the best option? My wife and I are in our 50ks reasonably fit - dog walkers rather than hikers so 20km per day would...
Well written - great thoughts and advice - thank you! I walked the Frances in the Fall shoulder season, mid-September to mid-October and want to return to walk the spring shoulder, mid-April to mid-May like you, so this was helpful (I also walked the Portuguese in the spring shoulder season and...
I am considering moving up to this year. I would probably start Oct 1 but leaving home on September 27th, arrive 28th, and 2 days for last minute errands and jet lag.
No matter when you walk - april/september, you will have the most gorgeous of flowers blooming all over this country, all having their own seasons. The weather, read stastistics wherever, but you can never predict rain no matter when or where. Its like it is, your flowers and plants need water.
I always like to know a bit about the hiking and long-distance walking background of a forum member before I reply on this topic. So I read just now that you did the Camino Francés in your 70th year in late winter from St J p de P. The weather was vile most of the way and it took you 26 days and...
Hi Kathymac, I do not know the best time to start there. I personally start about mid June I one started towards the end of May. When starting at these times, the weather seems to be settled. Not as wet as April - May and not as hot as August - September. People usually start when they can get...
I’ve walked the Frances three times in September/October and enjoyed it each time. Early in September the path can still be crowded but lightens up a bit later in the month. The weather tends to be cool mornings followed by warm days perfect for walking. Last year however was the wettest one...
I walked from SJPDP to SDC from August 24, 2022 to September 30, 2024. The weather was very good, I don’t remember any crowds until Saria. Obviously, weather and crowds can be a day by day issue over which you have no control. But, based upon my experience, September should be a “go”.
If you don't mind hotter weather, starting in August is less busy than waiting until the beginning of September. I started my first Camino on August 21, and never had a problem getting a bed. That was 8 years ago, but I believe that August is still much less busy than the first two weeks of...
I walked this route in September 2 years ago. The weather was great but hot in a few stretches across the Meseta. Around Foncebadon I bought some inexpensive gloves but wore shorts the entire Camino. Only a couple of days of rain with mist nearing the end.
Booked 3-4 days out then.
I'm...
I walked it in September last year and it was OK. You don't say which Camino you are taking though. I walked the Central route, and the Espiritual Variente.
Didn't have a problem with accommodation; I just booked for the following day. It does get busier after Tui as this is a popular start...
