    I'm out

I made it to Coca, and while I was preparing for the next day's walk I realised that I wasn't enjoying myself. I'd been looking forward to hours of walking through farmland and woodland by myself, but beyond Segovia I found the walking uninspiring and dull. The thought of just one more day...

    Menu peregrino: a close call

This afternoon, walking from Tres Cantos to Manzanares on the Camino de Madrid, I decided to take a break on a hilltop. The sun was shining, I was tired, and I found a concrete slab where I arranged my pack as a pillow and lay down. I put on some relaxing tunes on my iPod and pulled my cap down...

    The greatest challenge so far...

I have three cats. One of them is called Inara, but in hindsight should perhaps have been called Puffball: she's large and white, and every time you touch her a cloud of white fur bursts into the air. And I just discovered that she's been sleeping on my hiking gear. So I've just been...

    Farewell dinner

A fortnight from today my wife and I will fly to Madrid for a few days together before she flies home and I start walking. She wants to see me off with a nice fancy dinner on the last evening, but we're having some difficulty deciding where to go. So can anyone recommend somewhere nice? We're...

    Camino for cats

I just stumbled across an article on the BBC site (http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-35890789) about the resurgence of lynxes in Spain and Portugal. It makes for an interesting read, but what got me was the bit about the non-territorial lynxes, the ones that wander. Specifically, according to the...

    Shell

This afternoon I picked up my scallop shell. I had a local goldsmith make it for me: yellow gold on black silver, with blue diamonds. I'm pretty pleased with the result.

    Booked my ticket

I'll be flying to Madrid on 22 April, and will probably start walking on the 24th. For some reason business class was cheaper than economy, so I'll enjoy a litte luxury on the way out.

    Laundry egg

This morning as I was out walking, I was struck by a thought: how about using an Ecoegg laundry egg on the Camino? At the very minimum it eliminates the need for carrying or buying detergents (besides, of course, being better for the environment). Also, perhaps (and I'm going to experiment with...

    Bamboo

Does anyone have experience with bamboo underwear? Apparently bamboo fabric offers many of the same qualities as merino: wicking, antibacterial, temperature control, and of course sustainable.

Just got my passport in the post

So now it's official. No longer am I just someone who buys hiking gear and spends a lot of time reading forums and looking at pictures -- I'm a pilgrim preparing to walk to Santiago! By the way, @ivar: thanks for posting the passport.

    Drying laundry while walking

What's the best way to dry wet laundry while you're walking? Simply tie it to your pack and hope it doesn't fall off, and that the knots dry properly too? Use mesh stuff sacks? Socks on the handles of your hiking poles, underwear on your head?
