Smoking is still extremely popular in Spain. Particularly among young people. For those of us who have seen considerable decline in smokers and an influx of "smoke free" areas (bars, restaurants, etc) it can be disconcerting, but it is part of the culture in which we are guests. I concur with...
Well, 77,
If I were your mother, I would not allow you to go alone. I travel to Spain every summer (this one included) with students, and many of them are your age. You are "in between", certainly competent and responsible, but still young enough to be naive and vulnerable. As a teacher, I...
I concur with everyone else. Wine (and spirits) are available at every bar - as is food, cafe con leche, and minerales (non - alcoholic drinks). Take your pick - no one pays any attention. Wine is included in the Pilgrim menu - but there is no need to drink it.
As for Irachi? I arrived at...
Semana Santa (Holy Week) is a generally a solemn time in Spain. There are many, many religious processions and celebrations that include Mass and adorations. Businesses are closed as Good Friday is a fiesta day - "fiesta" typically translated in English as "party" also is "feast day" or...
I cant help weighing in here....
I did the usual - too much weight in the pack, blisters upon blisters (exacerbated by the pack weight, but would probably have happened anyway as I always get them!) For some reason, the majority of people with whom I made friends along the Way were much younger...
Re: not recommended
I'm so sorry to hear that! That parochial albergue was very high on my list of favourites in 2008 - perhaps there are no volunteers to operate it in "off" months? Pity.
Buen Camino,
Hi everyone,
It has been a long time since i posted here - for a variety of reasons. But I found this thread interesting and can't resist adding my little bit.
The first thought that came to me is that the US is a country of 350 million people. The numbers of those who know about the...
I was pressed into service in Viana when the priest realized at dinner that I was conversing in both English and Spanish... he asked me if I would read a little something - no problem! But then he began ad-libbing and had me silumtaneously translating - that really threw me! After that I was a...

One of my favourites! Two seatings for dinner - just like an elegant restaurant! And that stew.... soooooo good! Nice introduction to Palencia.
Buen Camino,
Last summer in Portomarín, I met a couple from Holland who had come on scooters! Not motorized, but powered by one leg! You know, the stand on one leg and push with the other kind! They stopped for a cafe and then passed me going up a hill.... I couldn't help but think about how great that...
Your rucksack will be safe on or near your bed. Often you will leave it outside a cafe or bar to go in for coffee or whatever. However, your valuables should never be left in your rucksack. Keep them on your person at all times either in a bumbag or some other small bag.
I had a bumbag...
Hi Rita,
It's wonderful to have a list of the "best albergues" along the Camino. And everyone certainly has his/her favourites place or a story of how their stay was made particularly special by an hospitalero or a group of Camino friends.
But I can't help but express a word of caution...
Viana is where I spent July 25, 2007 during the all night fiesta for the feast of Santiago. I gave up trying to sleep around sunrise and got up and walked to Navarrete....but fond memories of the place - I met some of my best camino friends there!
Buen Camino, Sandra!
Hi Annie,
You cannot get a credencial at the Pilgrim office in Santiago. Since it is the traditional "ending" place , not the "starting" place, they do not issue them. I learned this when I went there with a friend last year who wanted to obtain one in order to walk the Muxía/Fisterra route...
Hi K,
If you are so inclined, here is the link to my Camino Francés photos....it is more or less chronological... beginning in Roncesvalles and ending in Santiago... you can see the transition from trees to meseta to trees.... there are plenty...
Hi LIz,
The bus from Pamplona to Roncesvalles leaves at 6pm - arrives Roncesvalles 7:30 pm. (weekdays) The credencial office closes at 8 pm. It will probably be quite tight to make that, but you might! Otherwise, a taxi. or spend the night in Pamplona, check outthe various sights and go to...
The "patrimonio" is kind of a heritage group.
The short version is that they are still looking for a permanent home for the statue. It had been in the Plaza de Concello, and they considered placing it at the entrance to the city near the Chapel of the Snows, but that plan was ultimately...
