I walked the Tomar to Coimbra section last May and there were very few pilgrims. Had I not teamed up with another pilgrim I'd have been walking alone. I estimate that there were only about 20 people a day walking this bit. We met in albergues at night.
Yes it is, as long as you have continuously walked the last 100k. The stretch from Tomar to Coimbra is beautiful, but not busy. You meet people in albergues rather than on the path. I took the train from Coimbra because the distances between places to stay after that were too great for me.
I didn't find the evening pilgrim menus that you get in Spain on the Portugues Central earlier this year. But as others have pointed out all-in menus in the middle of the day are plentiful, delicious and good value. If you prefer to eat your main meal in the evening restaurants in Portugal were...

The Brierley guide gives Caldas de Reis to Padron as having 98% of the route on secondary roads or rural tracks, the preceding stage has 96%. The earlier stage had has about 3 kilometres more along secondary roads. They are both enjoyable and interesting stages.
Currently staying at Casa Aldea de Pedreiros. Just north of Teo, 12 k from Santiago. Nice quiet country place, good dorms, few people as not on Gronze or Wise Pilgrim. Only issue is nearby restaurants closed today, but there is a food truck on site for burgers and snacks. Or don't stay on Tuesdays!
Sadly Casa Fernanda was full, so I am staying at Casa Sagres a bit further on. Communal meal also. But yes, Barcelos was a good place to start, and I got there from Porto by 7am. Thank you.
Thank you all. I could not find anywhere reasonable to stay in Barcelos tomorrow so will spend tomorrow night in Porto or in Vila do Conde then get transport to Barcelos and walk from there.
I am currently walking from Tomar to Coimbra and had always planned to skip Coimbra to Porto because of distances between albergues. 20 k per day is about my maximum.
My plans have had to change and I need to shave a day or two off my walk. Please can anyone suggest a suitable place to restart...
I'm hoping to walk after Easter starting at Tomar (which I particularly want to visit), then taking the train from Coimbra to Porto. I'll probably take the river/coast alternative out of Porto then cut back to the central route. My comfortable walking distance is 15-20 km per day, and I prefer...
