    Day 1: Norte vs Frances

If you don’t have to walk every step on the “official” Camino, then look for the trails along the north coast that hug the cliffs and beaches for some amazingly beautiful scenery. I used Buen Camino to follow the blue path, but found a friend who had better luck using Gronze for the best...

LIVE from the Camino Primitivo or Finishing el Norte

If you can do the Norte coastal, you can do Primitivo. Hospitales is beautiful. I have never done Pola, but it is also supposed to be beautiful. But don’t reject hospitales just because you think it will be too hard.

LIVE from the Camino Primitivo or Finishing el Norte

Don’t miss the pension in St Julian. Nice rooms and an unforgettable meal.

Irun to Santiago de Compostela in 30 days?

I took a bus from Santander to Santillana Del Mar and walked to Comillas, skipping the industrial sprawl. You all want to check different apps to find the best coastal trails. The Camino does not always go close. I found Buen Camino had good alternative routes closer to some of the spectacular...

Irun to Santiago de Compostela in 30 days?

I am doing the Norte/Primitivo. I am on Day 20 and just reached Grado, first stop after Oviedo. I figure on 11 more days. So I think 30 would be pushing it. I would definitely start in Irun and skip some stops somewhere along the way. You can figure it out when you get here. I may bag the...

Coastal alternatives to the Norte's asphalt

Check out the alternate trails on Buen Camino and Gronze. I have avoided a lot of roads and walked by a lot of coastal paths. Lots of options but kind of hard to plan. Just got to get over here and seek out the coastal routes.

    On the Norte

I took the metro from Bilbao to Portugalete to avoid the urban and industrial sprawl. I am on the bus from Santander to Santillana for the same reason. I would have liked the coastal route out of Santander, but a 30 km hike just to get to Boos with rain threatening did not seem so exciting. Bus...

    Counting pilgrims on the Norte

I have counted 3 Peregrinos walking in the opposite direction (eastward).

    On the Norte

Actually had some sunshine today walking into Gernika! No albergue open so stayed at the Hotel Boliña. Other folks opting for monastery outside of Marquina or pushing thru beyond Gernika. Lezama tight too, so might push on to Bilbao. Big city, lots of beds. A fair number of pilgrims are going...

    On the Norte

The alberge in Marquina still has rooms tonight which bodes well for the days ahead. They have a sign up announcing that the alberge in Gernika is closed for repairs and suggest you go past 6 km for lodging. See picture below. By the way, Happy San Isidro day!

    On the Norte

I had a late start from Irun and only saw a few pilgrims along the way.

    On the Norte

Made it to Marquina on somewhat better trails overall, but the rain caught up with us 1.5 hours out! Drying out now and ready to wet the insides!

    On the Norte

I just finished Day 3 of the Norte just outside Deba. It has been great but if you are heading this way be forewarned that the trails are muddy and slippery from all the rain squalls. But the views are spectacular.

Path at Sanctuario de Guadalupe Closed

Is this a temporary closure? This is touted as a beautiful walk.

    Is Ondarroa a worthwhile detour?

I am planning my stages for the Camino del Norte and I note that, although there are interesting discussions about several alternative routes (mainly to hug the coast or avoid pavement), I have not found discussions regarding going through Ondarroa on the Deba-Markina stage. My guidebook and...

Best 2-week Del Norte section recommendation for pilgrims

For all you who have done the Norte and Primitivo, what will I miss on the Norte after Oviedo?
