The venerable Trangia stove is slow, boiling 2 cups in 9 minutes, but it consumes the denatured alcohol at a miserly rate. With it's internal reservoir filled with ~4 fl ounces (120 ml) and the aforementioned 240 ml container filled, I can go 10 days on an unsupported backpacking trip boiling 2...
I am curious, which alcohol stove are you using?
I use a Trangia while backpacking but did not take it with me to Spain. I only cooked in a few albergues and observed that most did have kitchen facilities-although a few did not- so usually you could have a hot drink most (but not all)mornings...
I leave one week from today and am I excited!perhaps I will miss the quantity of pilgrims I was fortunate enough to have met along the Camino Frances when I walked it in October, November 2005, but I am sure the few I do meet along this Camino, two years and one month later, will more than make...
I am mostly concerned with the latter half of the trek as it will be near winter as I head over the higher mountains and will be December when I get into Galicia. I dont mind some cold weather or even a light snow, but my sub-tropical blood is more attuned to heat than to a nail-biting cold!
My...
Two more suggestions:
Alcohol. The trangia is a great little stove that boils a pint of water fairly quickly, 9 minutes or so, depending upon the conditions, and is quite miserly in its DENATURED ALCOHOL consumption so will last considerably. I would suspect that the alcohol is readily...
The water in Spain is good but if you were to choose to drink from "non-potable" sources there are much lighter options than a filter. A great one is Aquamira, two small vials that one adds 7 drops of one vial then 7 drops of the other little vial, into one vial's cap, wait then drop into the...
I will not be as crowded but you will not be alone, either. I started mine in October. There are still pilgrims on the Camino and you can find solitude when you wish it and friendship when you need it. I found it to be a perfect time to walk.
Anyone care to venture advice as to what to expect along the Camino Mozarabe from the end of October to mid December? It appears I should start out northward from Sevilla on the 24th of October. I did the Camino Frances in 2005 starting three weeks earlier and had mostly good weather, with a...
Well, I have my ticket going to Madrid on 22 October, arriving 23 October and high speed train to Sevilla same day for a fast 2.5 hr trip to get there. Then get the Credential next day and head north. I am looking quite forward to the train part, if I can stay awake. It is not as easy for me...
same 'ole stick
IO have used the same 'ole stick now for thousands of miles (and many more kilometers) and am reluctant to retire it. But I have come up with a more travler friendly alternative and am going to start with it on my next Camino!
Weather from my notes/VdlP with it's source first:

October Med temp Ave max temp Ave min temp Days with rain
Sevilla 19.6 25.6(78.1F) 13.5(56.3F) 8
Badajoz 17.4 23.8(74.8F)...
My "new edition" (?)guide for the VdlP came in and I was surprised at the book's weight...it weighs a ton...well, 13 ounces (370 grams) anyway, considerably more than my older guide for the Camino Frances. Perhaps it is because the Camion Mozarabe is 235 km longer than the Camino Frances...
I suspect it is this one:
http://www.godesalco.com/plan
Select your route, then you can customize it to the miles you waish to walk and list out the villages with cumulative miles (km, actually), list the facilities at each village and once done you can even look at elevation profiles. The...
Sleeping bag of some sort for warmth is most likely not necessary for summer months. It likely is for autumn and spring. It certainly is for winter.
But it is not only required for warmth but to serve as a means of isolating you from all the bunks in the albergues with bare mattresses that...
Did you do the walk in January?
I am in the planning stages of going mid October through mid December this year of 2007 and walking from on to SDC, then Finisterre, Muxia, and back to SDC. As such, I would be most interested in your observation of the VdlP during the colder months.
I have...
