Craziest thing you've seen someone bring on Camino

I met a man carrying a baby's dummy tied to a walking stick..... he was picking up any feathers he found along the path as he was looking for the right feather that he'd lost as he wanted to take it back for his girlfriend.....he'd been on the Camino for months. I often think of him he was...

"Feet Growing" while on Camino (??)

My feet grew from a UK 5.5 to a 7 and so my boots no longer fitted. I wasn't expecting this at all as these were old well worn in boots I'd had for years, boots I trusted. However never before had I walked pretty much everyday for 5 weeks straight... with a few days off along the way. My feet...

Boots or trail shoes or trainers? Not sure what to take please advise.

I'd advise Boots but only if you get 1.5 sizes bigger than usual as feet will swell and stay swollen.... trail shoes are great but only if dry weather.... sandals are great but rocks will stub your toes. For my next Camino (July) I'm going with trail shoes plus sandals and leaving my boots at home.

My next packing list - what do you think ....

And a female list? Somewhat different I'd suggest....and fun to construct

    Backpack = Favorite new toy

I believe I began with what I thought I wanted and imagined I might need, I now have what I really need but may not particularly want - it's been interesting to experience this transition.

    Sleeping Bag

I would say yes to sleeping bag or here's a thought (my friend did this) buy a blanket/pashmina (near the tills) from Zara in Burgos for €10 warm lightweight and useful for a wrap in the evenings....

    Fleece or no fleece?

I left my fleece at home and have just bought one on Day 12 in a sale in Logrono as I caught a cold and really wanted to feel warm..... I might leave it behind in a few days - so there's going to be a grey fleece let loose and free on the Camino- perhaps bring a lasso! I brought a sleeping bag...

Do I really need walking sticks ?

If you do decide to take them please may I offer this tip-also buy fingerless cycling gloves with pads on the palms or you might get hand blisters.

    Tracker map apps

Thank you for the detail I'll pass this along to my friend. I have an apple phone and am planning on using the View Ranger app to send beacon messages back home.

    Tracker map apps

Interesting idea, thanks for that. I'm not sure why so many phones get 'taken' though?

    Tracker map apps

Does anyone have experience of using a tracker map app please? My walking friend Katy is a journalist and will be writing a blog as we go along and wants to be able to allow followers to see where we've got to. There appear to be several options....thoughts from experience please of using any of...

    cutting down the packing list

My 'must have' tool is an interdental micro brush nothing else will do - sticks twigs pins nothing, it's my one luxury on BIG walking trips, although I did take eyelash curling tongs along for the Great Wall of China but that was a joke!

    cutting down the packing list

I use sunscreen with a mosquito repellent incorporated into it, it's called 'Repel' and made by the Cancer Research Council. My understanding is that there are very few biting insects but just one bite can cause me huge grief so I don't ever risk it wherever I go in the world. The way I decide...

    cutting down the packing list

The question I always ask myself is 'Why am I trying to avoid getting wet?' If it's cold then fair enough I'm trying to maintain body temperature but when it's warm I strip down to basic thin clothing and I get wet... I've found its easier to walk like this than with flappy heavy wet weather gear...

    cutting down the packing list

I'm also leaving soon, and shaving weight and choosing what to take in my kit for various BIG trips has become a 'hobby' which over the years has entertained me and my friends....however I'd like to relate a story that is always in my mind when packing. My other hobby is climbing Volcanos and in...
