Hi @Ted Stek, I didn't walk the pass to Segovia: snow and stormy weather, so I took the train from Cercedilla. The terrain between Tres Cantos and Cercedilla was rough in patches, if I remember rightly.
You'd be better off posting in the Camino de Madrid subforum: there are plenty of people...
The first few days out of Madrid aren't particularly level: you cross the Sierra de Guadarrama, with some long days and mountainous terrain. By the time I reached Cercedilla I'd clocked up 1800 metres of ascent, spread over three days - and that's before you cross the mountain ridge to Segovia.
@Kiwi-family, Tres Cantos to Mataelpino might be quite tough: not just the length, but according to my GPS track from when I walked, you're also looking at almost 900 metres ascent.
I made it to Coca, and while I was preparing for the next day's walk I realised that I wasn't enjoying myself. I'd been looking forward to hours of walking through farmland and woodland by myself, but beyond Segovia I found the walking uninspiring and dull. The thought of just one more day...
Thanks @peregrina2000 and @jpflavin1. I've booked a room at Hostal Avanto, which apparently about 1.5km before Santa Maria. It's raining in Segovia now (I was forced to take my croquettas and sangria inside the bar!), but hopefully it will clear up by tomorrow morning.
The sky over the...
Today was particulary gruelling. It began with an epic 10 minute slog down to the station in Cercedila, then two hours in the burning sun waiting for the train. After more than half an hour by rail, I then had to navigate the dusty streets of Segovia to find my fancy hotel by the cathedral...
Hey @jpflavin1 (or anyone else who has walked this stretch recently), how flat is this bit? I've been struggling a bit with the frequent ascents, particularly over rough paths. I'm hoping to do Segovia to Santa Maria in one day, but if it's anything like the first three days out of Madrid it...
Hi Terry, I set out from Tres Cantos with your warning ringing in my ears. Luckily the crossings were all passable today. I was very happy that I had my poles for stability though!
Thanks for the suggestions, everyone -- well, except Introibo's. :) In the end, having considered various options (and the fact that the wife insist's on paying), I've booked a table at Albora.
(Some of the restaurants were fully booked until the end of July...)
A fortnight from today my wife and I will fly to Madrid for a few days together before she flies home and I start walking. She wants to see me off with a nice fancy dinner on the last evening, but we're having some difficulty deciding where to go.
So can anyone recommend somewhere nice? We're...
