    Camino through the Pyrenees

Hi everyone, My daughter and I walked the trek from Porto to Santiago last year. Next year we're going to do the Frances route. I'd like to do the challenge of hiking the height of the Pyrenees but would like to break it up into 2 days instead of 1. Also would like to stay in a hotel. Our...

Saint JPdP - Accommodation in SJPP

Any Accommodation in SJPdP that is special in some way to start the Camino. I’d love to hear recent recommendations I’m going in May 2023 Thanks Denzil
  3. Wow. Forest fire closes Napoleon route.

https://canalperegrino.org/cerrado-el-camino-de-santiago-en-la-frontera-por-incendio-forestal/ Dry conditions remote location. Would be interested in hearing from any pilgrims in the area. I'm 10 days out and long since left SJ.
  4. Calling it a day at Orisson - wind gusts too much.

For four years my goal has been to go from SJPP to Roncesvalles over the pass. Trained for it, did what I thought I needed to do But when a gust of wind nearly blew me over I knew it was time to pack it in. Made it to orisson(which is now closed for renovations) where the friendly owner called...
  5. Albergues in St. Jean and Roncesvalles

Hi, Starting my Fall Camino in early November from St Jean. I'm pretty experienced on the Frances and have walked it a number of times before, but all Pre-Covid. I'd really prefer to not have to book ahead (Just my Preference) but hear different things about this since Covid. I'm especially...

    Valcarlos

I am planning on starting from SJPP 1st week in January. On my last winter camino I walked onto Roncesvalles. This time I plan on stopping overnight in Valcarlos. Does anyone know if there is an albergue in Valcarlos that takes reservations.
  7. Weather predicament at SJPP - which route is safest?

Hello fellow pilgrims, I’ve just arrived in SJPP and my plan was to set off for Roncesvalles tomorrow morning via the Napoleon route, potentially stopping at Orisson for the night. However, the people at the pilgrim office have told me it is too dangerous to do the napoleon route until...

    Valcarlos/Burguete or Borda/ Roncesvales?

My friend and I will be on the Frances at the most popular time to walk - no option for a few reasons. I am reasonably but not super fit for a 70 year old, not keen on crowds. Mostly prefer private accommodation but flexible. Which would you suggest?
  9. Can you buy a sack lunch at Orisson if you're not a guest there?

We aren't staying at Orisson, but are planning on having breakfast there. Do they sell sandwiches to go? If they don't, we're prepared to buy bread, cheese, etc in SJPP and make our own lunch at one of our rest breaks on the way to Roncesvalles.
  10. Your Opinion on how I will start

Good morning from "near" Atlanta, Georgia! My May 2023 Camino is on my mind this morning. Yes, I know I have time but I like to think about it haha. I guess to better offer advice, I'll be 49 when I walk my first Camino. I probably need to lose 30 pounds haha but I'm okay walking. :) I'm...

    4 Amigas

Starting SJPP 12 Sept taking the Main Waymarked route but first overnight in hotel outside Valcarlos. We were unable to book anything in orisson. What are our options in getting from Orisson to Valcarlos without having to take the alternative road route from SJPP.
  12. Walking time from SJPP to Borda

There is a chance I will be arriving on 8/31/22 by train to SJPP at 3:20pm from Bayonne if I am not successful finding earlier transport. I am wondering what may be an average time involved with walking up the "slope" to Borda? The check-in time there ends at 6:30pm. I will also need to make my...

Anyone walked the Valcarlos this summer?

We’re heading out of St Jean August 22 or 23 2022. To Santiago. Did the Napoleon 2019 and want to try the Valcarlos. Thanks
  14. GPS for Valcarlos route (and "all" Caminos) available here

MODS not sure if the title is right or slightly misleading as you still have to do it yourself :) Hi! There have been a few questions on here about where to find a GPX track for the Vacarlos way. I hope this will help others . (and i don't end up looking a numpty) I am walking from SJPP to...

    SJPDP - Napoleon Route

Hi - just wondering whether we need an OS map or equivalent to go from SJPDP to Roncesvalles? Is an OS map needed for the rest of the Camino Frances too? Thank you - Sian

Accomodation St. Jean Pied de Port

Can you recommend hostels in St. Jean Pied? I was looking at Gite Makila but it is booked for my first night, which is a shame but will check again later. I have never needed to book ahead doing the Portugues and Primitivo but understand the Frances is more popular, and see on the forum people...

    Orisson taxicab

Quick questions: What is the cost of a taxicab from/to Orisson if we want to split the first stage into a 2 day walk? Are taxicabs readily available? Thanks.
  18. Spend a day in SJPP, or just start the walk?

I've never been to SJPP. Is it a place that people usually want to stay for a day/night before beginning their walk, or is it more of a "just get there and go" kind of thing? I'll be coming from a few days in Bayonne.

LIVE from the Camino Valcarlos route! Days 1 & 2

Buen camino a todos! I just wanted to hop on and remind any distraught travellers who cannot make the 25 km climb to Roncesvalles and also cannot find reservations in Orisson/Hunto/Borda that the Valcarlos route exists! The Pilgrims office was suggesting to us that we power straight through...
  20. Bizarre discovery about the two route options between Saint-Jean and Roncesvalles

Everybody seems to assume that the route through Valcarlos is easier because its highest point (1057m) is lower than the highest point on the Napoleonic route (1427m). While preparing the new version of my app I was recalculating the total ascent and descent on both these routes. This is...
