The pilgrimage is comparatively recent and so is the tourist boom following the impulse of Compostela.
That weekend in 1985 dawned sunny and bright. Take a look at the images of Santiago published in elCorreo Gallego on the same day 25 years ago - the streets almost deserted.
More than half of the population fled to the beaches leaving the rúas free to the devotees at that time who wanted to fulfill the ritual Xacobeo . In the vicinity of the Cathedral it was not uncommon to hear conversations in English , Portuguese , French or German. The Archdiocese of Santiago began precisely at that time to compute the Compostela pilgrims numbers after covering the Way. According to the information given on their website, between 1985 and 1986 only 2491 travelers reached the Galician capital. Little compared with the record numbers that register at the offices of the Church today. And the daily average stands at two thousand accreditation.
And yesterday returned to be a day of queues only bearable with an overdose of patience.
