A Cautionary Tale especially for North American Travelers

Hello: I began my Camino from St. Jean Pied de Port on May 7th. Unfortunately, on May 9th I fell and fractured my kneecap at Orisson. I spent two weeks in a hospital in St. Palais (Polyclinique Sokorri) where I had my first knee operation. I want to stress especially for North American pilgrims that it is advisable to carry extra travel insurance in the event that an evacuation is necessary. Fortunately, I had signed with just such a group plan. The evacuation was a Camino unto itself. Nevertheless, I got back to the New York area safely.
For you who are considering staying the the Refuge at Orisson or Kayola, I have nothing but the highest praise for the concern and empathy expressed by Jean Jacques and Carole Etchandy who took time from their busy day to find out where I was and then visit me in the hospital.
I will return next May to complete my Camino Frances. Buen Camino to all, John

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
Glad to hear that you got home safe and sound and that you were kindly treated. What a disappointment that must have been for you. However, I suppose that faced with such an event, pain and temporary disablement make the previous desire to walk 400 miles fly right out of the window.

Better luck next time!

Dear John,
So sorry to hear that you were hurt just a couple days into your trip. How disappointing! I'm glad you got to recover and felt everyone treated you kindly. Thanks for the tip about extra travel insurance - we all would hate to have to need it, but of course it's wise to be prepared. Since we have contact with many pilgrims from the US, we'll pass on your advice. I do hope you get to come out this way again to complete the Camino. In the meantime, recover well and God bless! - Faith

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.
