If you get to the pilgrims office by 1630, get registered, and your credential stamped, they will be able to offer you a bed in the municipal albergue for 8 euros, and they will physically walk with you to assign you to your bed.

New Original Camino Gear Designed Especially with The Modern Peregrino In Mind!
Hi Dave,

You might want to read through some threads. A lot of Pilgrims suggest taking it easy the first day or two. Maybe stopping in Valcarlos on the lower route or Orrison on the high route (you do need reservations there.) But, I would say start early to give yourself plenty of time to get to wherever you end up. I am NOT speaking from experience, but just from reading the threads and guidebooks. I go May/June 2014.

Buen Camino!!

I want to add that you do need to reserve a bed at the albergue in Orrison. They take reservations and they do tend to book out in peak periods.

You'll be fine, the pilgrims office closes around 9PM, I went shopping for food and walked around SJPDP after I was assigned my bed and also went out to dinner around 8PM, try the Gateau Basque almond cake if they have it as part of the pilgrim meal.
If you are in decent shape and have no issues, walk on to Roncesvalles, then onto Zubiri the next day.
