hi, we are a group of 6 mature female and prefer to do Hostal or hotel rather than the Albergues, i am looking to either pre book or at least have a contact email/number for some along the way. We are walking in May 2011, Roncesvalles seems to be full and expensive €54 per person :( has anyone went on to Burguete 3klm on, and if so any experience of accommodation there ? there appear to be hostals but having difficultly getting emails for same, we are breaking our first day and staying in Orisson so we should be ok walking wise, also do we need sleeping sheets in Orisson??
Appreciate any advice fellow walkers have on this matter

Ann, You do need sleeping sheets for Orisson. And although blankets are typically provided in French gîtes, I can't remember whether they had many blankets there or not.

I don't know about accommodation in Burguete, but you might find you are quite tired by the time you reach Roncesvalles. I was quite fit when I walked from Orisson, (as I had walked from Le Puy) and had good weather for the crossing, but I still felt pretty tired by the time I reached Roncesvalles. I could have walked the extra 3km to Burguete if I had to, but I am glad I never had to! Plus, although I am a very lapsed Catholic, I was glad to have a chance to attend the pilgrim Mass in the evening in Roncesvalles.

Or you could go the Valcarlos Route & stay in Valcarlos, as I did. There are 2 hotels there with restaurants overlooking the valley & daily menus. I stayed at Casa Marcelino & really liked it. In Roncesvalles, I think there hostals but as you found out, they are expensive. Zubiri has many different places for pilgrims to stay as well & has been taking business that way from Larrasoana for years.

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
Hello!
Burguete is a 4 km very easy walk from Roncesvalles, along a broad path through the wood , down all the way. I stayed there in october walking from St. Jean, in a small hostel"Juandaburre" c/san Niclas 948760078, called there from St. Jean. Did not speak English. Nice room, nice, clean bathroom in the corridor, the owner took my wet clothes for drying, very cheap, 19 euro for room and breakfast. There was a hotel across the street with good menu del dia in the afternoon.
I have once stayed at hotel Akerreta, half a km after Larrasoaña. Very nice place with good food, costs more. If there is one stop I would spend money not to stay in the refugio it is here.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
We had a great thread a few months back . It can be found by searching for ' ZUBIRI - ALTERNATIVE ACCOMODATION' - I was amazed that there was such a varied choice in a small town.I seem to remember that there were some good links as well.
