Has anyone heard of any RECENT problems on any of the caminos with money issues like ATM useage, etc. Just double checking to relieve my paranoid mind before heading out on the Le Puy. Thanks for ALL your help and patience with us newbies.

As Falcon already stated you will need a atm card with a 4 Digid pincode.

4 digit PIN codes? Isn't this outdated advice? I have been withdrawing cash from ATM's in Spain and Italy every few days for every one of our Caminos since 2010 and I have never had a problem using my Singapore card that has six digits. I can not change it to four digits even if I wanted to. I've never had a problem withdrawing money. I've only used my US card once or twice but that also had 6 digits. Maybe the really old machines still can handle only 4 digit PINs but I haven't encountered them yet.

The standard PIN length in Europe is 4 digits by most internet reports. Wells Fargo recommends having a 4-digit PIN for international travel. Italy reports 5-digit codes, but accepts 4-digit codes.

My personal experience four years ago was that a 6-digit code for a credit union account would not work. After visiting four different major banks on León and making a lot of phone calls, my friend was stranded without money. Do what you want; accept the advice you want. Four-digit PINs work; others may not.

We still use only 4 digit PINs in Europe, sorry. Buen Camino, SY

My bank statement disagrees with you but if pilgrims with longer codes are able to change their PIN code to 4 digits and that works for them, I'm happy for them. I'm just saying that my cards with 6 digit PINs have now worked 37 straight times on Spanish and Italian casinos over the past 4 1/2 years. I'm not sure about my US card but my Singapore bank cards will not let me choose a PIN code of less than 6 digits and those are the ones I have used most often when walking. YMMV

I also could not use my card with a 6 digit pin. It may be, @MichaelSG, that the ATM just ignored the first or last two digits you inserted, and that is why it worked. But I definitely could not use my card until I had changed to a 4 digit pin.

MAKE CERTAIN YOU ADVISE YOUR BANK or card servicing company that you will be traveling abroad. Provide the dates and countries. Allow at least a week's advance notice, so the note percolates through the global electronic network.

Failing to do this will result in card denials and / or your ATM debit card being eaten buy a machine...most certainly NOT a good thing.

A four-digit PIN code is also, as explained above, essential.

I hope this helps.

One day, in the kitchen before the big family Sunday lunch, a young girl asked her mother why the roast was cut in half before it was cooked. Her mother answered “That is the way my mother taught me to cook a roast. It’s always done that way.” The daughter thought for a second and asked again, “But why is it cooked that way?” The mother could only reply, “Well Grandma will be at lunch. Let’s ask her the question.”

At lunch, the inquisitive child explained that she and her mother were curious about why the roast was cut in half before it was cooked. The older woman answered “That is the way my mother taught me to cook a roast. It’s always done that way.” The daughter persisted, “But why is it cooked that way?” Grandma could only reply, “After lunch, we are going over to see great-grandmother in the nursing home. We can ask her.”

At the nursing home, with the daughter and granddaughter in tow, the grandma gently spoke to her very old mother, “Mama, do you remember the Sunday roasts that you used to make?” “Yes, I do” answered the old lady with the faint voice from her bed. “Why did you always cut the roast in half before it was cooked?” asked the young child. Great-grandmother stroked her chin in deep thought for a full minute, trying to remember back so many years. Finally her eyes lit up as she remembered why. She was happy for the sign that dementia hadn’t set in just yet. With a relieved smile on her face and impressed with herself that she remembered something that her daughter didn’t, she answered, “Well, honey, back in our house on Maple Street, we only had that small old oven. The big roast only fit in it if I cut it in half and put the pieces side by side.”

Based on the ATM asking me for my six-digit PIN code today at Deutsche Bank in Bilbao , I am pretty sure that if your card has a six-digit PIN, any modern ATM in Spain (or Italy) asks for 6 digits. If it has a four-digit PIN, it asks for that. If anyone wants to see the photos of the machine, I have saved them. Just for reference, I used a new US based Bank of America debit card in the DB ATM. No problems at all, just like the last several years with my Singapore and other US bank cards.

@MichaelSG - can we check something with you please. Do you usually look for a branch of Deutsche Bank, or its known associates? or do you also use others like Caixabank, Banco de Galicia etc?

I have also noted from another thread that the contactless card machines are now creeping into use in Spain. Bad news IMO so my cards will be used very carefully and as fully protected as possible.

I have used whatever bank ATM was available and convenient. I won't need to take out money again soon but in a week or two, I'll try my Singapore card with something other than Deutsche Bank. I'll report back how it goes.

My six digit PIN with my BoA card worked getting money out of the ATM at Liber_bank yesterday. I still haven't found a bank that tries to stop me entering all six digits or doesn't let me withdrawal funds.
