Planning a May/June 2015 walk
Time of past OR future Camino
May / June (2015)
Hello Everyone,

Just wondering if there are any other pilgrims sailing instead of flying to Spain from the USA?
I'm retired, so the longer travel time is not an issue for me. One advantage to taking a ship is that you will have absolutely no jetlag when you arrive! Buen Camino!

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Are you sailing on a freighter or a cruise ship? I was just reading today about a freighter that goes to Barcelona from the US. That's another bucket list item for me.

I guess it's time to start a new thread "Solo female on a freight ship from US to EU" with all the fears connected to it ;)
Personally have never used this kind of transportation (nor am I female) but I'm sure it's much more risky than walking Camino solo as a female...

My bucket list item isn't actually to the EU; I just happened to see it today when looking at the various trips available. I don't feel that a solo Camino trip is risky for a female, nor do I think a freighter around the world cruise is particularly risky.

Not a freighter, although that would be interesting I'm sure! I'm taking the Norwegian Epic cruise ship. It's a repositioning cruise so they have some fantastic rates, as low as $399 per person.

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.

No, it's a cruise ship so the hardest part will be spending less time at the buffet and more time in the fitness center LOL !

Great. We did this from Brasil some years ago with the MSC Opera .
Good idea. There are sailing many between north and south America to Europe in springtime and for those who want go back to north or south America in october or november they sail the other way round. Just a matter of planning ,save some money and have a good time on board.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
by the way. You can book transfers on cargo ships as well. Some people do from Rotterdam to the US by containerships. In 9 days you are in NYC and have an excellent cabin and a good time.

I will check into the cargo ship option...thanks for the info Albertinho!

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

Have a great voyage. We arrived in Barcelona from Buenas Aires (many years ago) and then trucked across to Santander with all our trunks to catch the ferry to Plymouth. Do take 24 hours to get your landlegs back, we found that the dockside was rocking after 10 days at sea ;) and that the hired truck's movement was preferable to standing or walking.
Hopefully you will have more time in Barcelona than we did - we arrived at about 9am and left by lunchtime, straight off the dockside.
Buen Camino

We did two crossings, the NCL Epic and the Star, and had a ball. Epic went to Barcelona and Star went to Copenhagen. We had a room with a porthole. We usually opt for a balcony, even though they cost more, but on the springtime crossing, the weather is still cool and it is very windy because the ship has to keep up it's speed.
We sat with a different group of people each evening, most of them were from Australia, and we made lots of new and interesting friends. On a number of occasions we missed the evening shows because we were having so much fun with the dinner company. Often, we closed the restaurant and the staff had to chase us out.
The Epic had great shows, such as Blue Man Group and Cirque du Soleil, which charged an additional fee. Even though we had seen the Cirque on land, the sea-based show was the best show I've ever seen anywhere, and not just Cirque, but any show! They were out of this world.
It was a great way to get to Europe, avoid a drastic time change, and get to see a little of Barcelona before heading out on the Camino. I highly recommend it, if you have the time and it is cheaper than flying. If I recall, I think Jane discussed this in her book, Women of the Way.
Let us know how it works out for you Firefly57.

Hi firefly57,
I'm booked on the same cruise out of Miami as you. I've been thinking about the Camino for a number of years, but until now have always had another adventure instead. I haven't yet decided on the cruise (full refund until Feb 3) or the Camino. Please let me about your plans, and maybe we'll see each along the way and Way.

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
@jim18y. Just do it!!!! Sounds like you have been thinking about it long enough. You've already overcome a big hurdle by making reservations to get to Spain!! Buen Camino.

Wonderful to know there might be another pilgrim onboard! I too am looking at that Feb 3 date....last chance to get a refund/ change plans. Just in case you're not aware of this...I looked up recent fares and found they had decreased from what I paid so I called NCL and ask them to reduce mine to the lower fare. Saved me a little bit.

firefly57, thanks for the heads up on the fare. I'll check. I'm paying $835 for a studio. I'll probably transfer my booking to a tour company, since they offer onboard credits and other incentives. I've done this on my two previous NCL Epic transatlantic repositioning cruises.
