Arriving in St. Jean after Pilgrim´s Office closes

The only way for me to get to St. Jean in one day is to get there at 7:30pm after the pilgrim´s office has closed. Will I still be able to stay at an Albergue that night despite not yet having my passport?

Or should I arrange to stay in Bayonne that night and get to St. Jean the next morning?

Thanks for any help/advice!

I would travel SJPDP in the evening. The office stays open well into the evening. Check the opening hours when you arrive and try to get you pilgrim passport the night before you set off, it makes the morning much easier. Also I would recommend that you buy your food rations on your way from the train station ( there is a shop close to the station en route to the town centre). Finally, if your budget permits, stay in a hotel on your first night. The first day's walk is taxing as can be your first night in the hostel. By the second night everyone is too tired to make too much noise.

In Saint-Jean the Pilgrim office of the Amis du Chemin de Saint Jacques at 39 rue de la Citadelle usually stays open for the arrival of the last train. Their telephone is 05 59 37 05 09. In season the office is open from 7h30 to 12h30 and then from 13h30 to 22h. When you are on site they can provide you with a Credential and lodging assistance. Their volunteers help run the albergue at 55 rue de la Citadelle, but they do NOT take reservations. If their albergue is full they will help you find other pilgrim lodgings. They keep up to the minute lists of available space throughout the SJPdP area. The rr station in St Jean is miniscule and closes for the night after the last train arrives.
