I have heard that lodging in Spain in general can be tight on religious holidays, and I noticed that Ascension Day is May 10th, right about when I will be in SJPdP, Valcarlos, or Roncevalle, depending on when we arrive. Should I expect any problems getting into the Alberges?

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
I do not think it is a major holiday in the Pyrenees- not sure. However, last year I arrived in Santiago the day before the Ascension and discovered in Santiago it is a major holiday with concerts etc. Luckily I had a reservation, but many pilgrims found themselves scrambling to find accommodation.

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
As I passed Mote do Gozo one year, the noon Ascension fireworks went off. Completely unaware of the event, I arrived in Santiago and easily found accommodations. The festivities were great, focused on the Parque da Alameda.
