Porto
Hi, I’m currently on the Porto Literal route and was considering doing the Spiritual route and have read that the boat trip is really wonderful, however it has been mentioned that if I take the boat then I won’t be able to get my certificate. Is this correct?

Many thanks for your help

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.

The Variante Espiritual is beautiful, and could well be one of the highlights of your camino.

The river section, sometime also known as the Via Crucis, starts in Vilanova de Arousa and goes to Pontecesures on the Río Ulla, to be followed by the short walk from Pontecesures to Padron.

Taking the river section does qualify towards gaining the Compestella (certificate), and the operators will stamp your pilgrim passport.

There are 3 operators on this route, each departing at slightly different times, with departure times influenced by the prevalent tides.

The boat ride (and SV) is fine for the Compostela as long as you include Vigo in your itinerary, which begins the all-critical 100 km distance to Santiago.

Perfect memento/gift in a presentation box. Engraving available, 25 character max.

You are correct if you you have two stamps a day in your credential from the last 100 kms of the OFFICIAL AND RECOGNIZED ROUTES to Santiago de Compostela.

The recognized routes are only two, one from Tui on the Central route ( officially 106 kms) and one from Vigo on the Coastal .officially 100 kms and recognized by the Cathedral of Santiago, represented by the Pilgrims Office ( where you collect your certificate)
the official route leads to Caldas de Reis .

The Variante Espiritual however is a nice route but is not recognized by the pilgrims office
it is a nice touristical walk , devised by the Xunta de Galicia and the Tourist Board .
They probably saw all the pilgrims going straight on direction Caldas de Reis and made a plan to get the pilgrims in their direction as it is good for the commerce and work employment in the area , by letting them turn Into to the left , north of Pontevedra, what is a detour of about 55 kms from Pontevedra to Vila Nova de Arousa. It has nothing to do with a pilgrimage. The pilgrims in the past coming from the south took the shortest and safest way to Santiago and that was by Caldas de Reis.

So you will get your Compostela certificate as you can show at least one stamp from Tui or Vigo in your credential and I guess you can do that because you are on your way from Porto and you definitely pass by Tui or Vigo.

But as a voluntary at the Pilgrims Office I met a few pilgrims at my desk who started
from Pontevedra via the Variante Espiritual and they thought they walked at least 100 kms ( about 130 kms in this case from Pntevedra to Santiago but the certificate was refused because the kms from Pontevedra by the Variante do not officially count.

At the Pilgrims Office you can apply for a so called Certificate of Distance .
The employee notes that your walked the kms and where from you started .
If you walked from Tui it shows 106 km.
Ho ho you say “ I walked the Variante so the total must be 106 and 55 km “ total
161 kms . No way the Variante is not recognized so your Distancia shows ”only “ 106 kms . Showing this certificate at home to your dear ones is a disappointment thus.

Hola

Indeed th Variante Espiritual is a great 3 day walk in more solitude than the "official" main way from Tui to Santiago.
When I walked it 7-8 years ago it was a good way for me to prolong my Camino, starting in Porto - and going to Santiago and further to Finisterra.

I would recommend anyone to include the VE in their Camino and you can find a map here:

I hope this helps.

Good Day, Is there a route map online showing the recognised route from Vigo to Santiago (Part of the coastal route I believe) that will be recognised by the Pilgrims Office please?
Will be going in a few weeks and am planning to start in Vigo, do the river section (Vilanova de Arousa to Pontecesures) and want to be sure that we qualify for the Compostela.
Many thanks!
