It is hard to explain this probably anywhere but in this forum. But every since I heard about El camino my heart, mind and soul cannot stop thinking about this. I am not normally this way. So I know I must walk but do not know yet. I suspect because of commitments it cannot be any sooner than next year. The good news is that I am use to preparing for long walks, however never one of this length. The longest I have gone is 3 days for 62 miles. I will be reading your advise for this nearly 50 years young woman. I hope to see you there some day soon. Peace to you, Georgia from Kansas in the US. 8)

Hi Georgia!

It sounds like your Camino has started! You will love picking up tips on this forum as you plan your pilgrimage.

You have experience of long walks, so you know what to expect. The distance of the Camino can seem daunting, but in many ways it's similar to what you've already done. You can only walk a certain distance in any one day. The Camino just has more days! :D Enjoy!

Buen Camino!

Hello Georgia,
Yes your 'training' will stand you in good stead, miles under the belt are a good thing, even a lot less, more often is good, they all help. The planning is fun...........& then you go with the notion lets see what happens, your Camino comes to you, everyone is different.
Buen Camino

Hi Georgia,
I am sure you will have no problems. If you can walk 22 kms per day over three days, that's fine, and after a week you will be fitter and stronger and able to walk longer distances if you wish. When at the start, I don't think anyone thinks of the total distance - just the the day ahead.
As has been said many times on this forum, pack light and start slowly. If by the fourth or fifth day you feel tired and have pain, have an easy day such as 10 km. The majority of injuries are caused by trying to do too much at first. Buen Camino

Hi Georgia,
It's me back again, because you mentioned your age. Do not be concerned. The are many, many peregrinos who are older than you. I walked the Camino Frances at the age of 79, and last year walked Camino Arragones and Frances and part of Arles - 925 kms, and I was 80, and I am planning to walk the Via de la Plata next year. I admit though I am fit and healthy. Buen Camino

Hi Georgia -
Like you, I can't stop thinking about the Camino and spend a lot of time researching and reading about it. I plan to walk it in Sept/Oct 2013...although I am not sure I can wait that long. I may attempt to go this Sept and walk half of it, then walk the entire Camino next year.
I've found a lot of good reading about the experience and have two books ("I'm off now: Losing and Finding myself on the Camino de Santiago" by Hape Kerkeling and of course, Shirley Maclaine's book "The Camino".) I've just ordered a Pilgrim's Guide to the Camino from Amazon.
I'm so excited to find this forum so I can read about others who have done this...and those who plan to go, as I am planning to go.
Good luck to you and Buen Camino.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
Julie from Kansas City. THanks for the book recommendations. I ordered one and it isn't here yet. I am hoping actually to teach a class on preparing for the walk. I teach classes (for fun) putting together for adults on different subjects. I thought preparing for a pilgrim's journey would be the class name and I would use the material I pull together from many sources to help me get ready. Plus help me remain calm until my trip to Espana! Buen Camino
