Camino Frances advice

I have walked Camino Frances, Le Puy Camino and Camino Norte Irun to Bilbao all in August. What is it like walking middle September to October? Is there lots of rain and what's the temperature?
Would I need a sleeping bag ? What sort of jacket?

Impossible to say about rain - that is very variable. I walked the Camino Frances in September-October and had only two or three days with rain. In another year there could easily have been more. Temperatures went from below freezing around Rabanal in the morning to around 25C. Many albergues no longer supply blankets and you risk cold nights if you do not bring a sleeping bag unless you plan to stay in hostals. I would bring a lightweight waterproof jacket and adjust for temperature with a number of light layers underneath. A heavyweight jacket would be unnecessary weight and bulk.

My wife and I have hiked Camino Frances four times, always in September-October. The weather has generally been nice. Crisp mornings, a few times it was below freezing, but quickly warmed up. Some days were warm or even hot, but not sweltering. And you cannot predict how many days of rain there will be. One camino we experienced 30 straight days of sun. But a few days during our caminos, we woke up with pouring rain and the rain was non stop for several hours. Even goretex rain jacket will not keep you dry. As others have noted, it can be quite cool at night. We brought light, compressable sleeping bags our first two caminos and were glad we did. The last two caminos, we stayed in private rooms, each which had warm, cozy beds, so we did not need sleeping bags. Bob

It's more or less impossible to predict. Some years ago I walked frances from 23.sep to 23.oct. Not a single drop of rain. But early october there were so nasty cold mornings. Don't forget some light gloves. And I will never forget a late afternoon in hospital de orbigo in early october and all pilgrims were tucked into their sleeping bags on a freezing day.

What Bradypus said. I've walked when it's been wet and cold and other years when it was warm and dryer. I'd take a sleeping bag for sure or at least a lightweight down blanket.

I walked the CF September 10 - October 20, 2022. Although weather can (and does) vary from year to year, last year was unbelievably hot at the outset (first few days were well above 30; one reaching 40). The day I spent in SJPdP on September 9th prior to my departure was cool and damp. A few sprinkles over the first few weeks, but don't think I wore rainwear of any sort before October (Galicia). Burgos was (and I understand often IS) cold. Beyond that, I often needed a warmer jacket (layers), especially when I was starting pre-dawn (probably from around the 3rd or 4th week in September, and thereafter). Had a few days with a fair amount of rain in October, nearing Santiago, but probably only about 3 days of serious rain the whole time. Other episodes of rain were pretty brief. Wishing you favourable weather on your Camino.
