Camino Frances plus Finisterre/Muxia

Hello,

I have my plane tickets for a September walk from Sarria to Finisterre/Muxia, but I am starting to see that this trip may have to be rescheduled. For one, my U.S. passport renewal may be getting held up. Also, not sure what Covid will look like mid-September.

If I decide to reschedule for spring and wish to walk the full Camino Frances plus Finisterre/Muxia, what is the recommended time I allow for this? Is 45 days sufficient? It will be my first Camino. Thank you for your help!!

More than enough Zach. I did it in 40 days including 2 rest days. I was 58 at the time.

I did it in 46 days Zach, from St. Jean Pied de Port to Finisterre, so you’ll be fine, so long as you are reasonably fit and you do some practise walks a month or so before you go. That was my first Camino, in 2017. I made 3-4 stops for several days along the way, at places that were simply too good to just walk through. If I was to do it now, with only overnight stops to sleep and rest, I could do it comfortably in 33-36 days, no problem whatsoever. So you’ll be fine. It takes 2-4 days to get into your rhythm and then it’s a breeze. Make sure you have good shoes and good socks is my best advice and carry only what you have to. I was 75 kilo weight myself and I carried 8-9 kilo in my backpack. If I was doing it now I’d breeze it through. Good luck! Once they let you out …. and in I suppose…. It’s all a guessing game now.

On our first Camino, we took 32 days from St. Jean to Santiago, including an extra day in Leon. Then about 8 days from Santiago to Finisterre and Muxia, including a couple of stopover days. My husband and I were in our 50's and 60's and not particularly fit. I'd highly recommend starting in SJPdP instead of Sarria. It's an amazing walk. Buen Camino!

i too was planning a fall walk from SJPdP to F, but have decided to move my start date to Spring of ‘22. While I’ve heard travel times that range from 34-45 days, I’m planning ~40 days. The walk will take what it takes…no more - no less. This is a once in a lifetime experience for me, so I neither want to rush it, nor be held to a schedule. I’m going to be 70 for the walk, and I’m retired, so I have the luxury of flexibility. Hope to meet you out there - Buen Camino!

It will probably be sufficient. We took 41 days to get from Roncesvalles to Finisterre (including 2 rest days). To that you could add a day or two from SJPP to Roncesvalles and a day or two between Finisterre and Muxia. I always suggest booking flights with more days than you think you need. That way if medical issues force you to stop for a few days, or if you find it best to walk shorter days than anticipated, you don't find yourself racing to Santiago. We booked two months for that trip and there was plenty to see in Spain with our remaining couple of weeks.
