Car rental in Santiago

We had a spare 10 days at the end of our El Norte camino this year. We hired a car at Santiago airport very cheaply ($168 for 10 days, unlimited km) and toured Galicia, particularly the Rios Baxias region.
I'll probably have a few days extra in Santiago after the camino and I'd like to know a little more details of the car rental. Would you please be able to provide some useful information? Thanks for the ideas.

Thank you @SabineP ! We walked the Norte in 2015 so not sure how relevant my information would be @Don Kim. I do remember we had a bit of trouble when we returned the car. The representative said we had caused a ding in the paintwork - but we’d taken photos with the rep when we’d picked up the car so we’re able to prove we had not.

Enterprise Rental Car has an office at the train station. Their office WAS at the top of the stairs to the left at the beginning of Avenida de Lugo.

There are a gaggle of other, less expensive, but non-name brand rental outlets outside the airport. Research them locally. You can ride the #6A bus to get to these places. They are arrayed after the Hotel Garcas on the way to the airport.

Hope this helps,

Tom

Parking is always an issue with a rental car in crowded European cities. Paying or declining the insurance coverage is also an issue which you should ask for clarification from your insurance company.

True, did not know Santiago had non name brand rental outlets too.
I used them in Malaga and it was indeed a fairer deal than with the big boys.

I did not learn about the cheaper car rental places until a fellow volunteer chastised me for renting from Enterprise - they WERE expensive, and told me about several less expensive options.

Some of these companies are local only. Others are Spain-wide. In the latter case, you can drop a car at another Spanish location.

Hope someone benefits from this.

T2A has an important point. Dropping off a car in another country (potentially another city) other than the origin of your rental can cost dearly, i.e. Spain to France or vice versa and Spain to Portugal and vice-versa could double the price of your rental.

Dear Kanga,
$168 for 10 days are a great deal, I think.
However I'll check it out if I have a few extra days in Santiago. Thank you so much for your posts.

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
