Has anyone here purchased a Pay As You Go phone in Spain?

If so, what was the cost and I'm wondering if it's any less than getting a SIM for my unlocked iPHone or if it's about the same cost.

I'll be taking an iPad mini, so don't really need anything on the iphone except the phone part.

I may not WANT to take my nice iPhone this year.

Would it make sense to leave it home and just pick up a phone in Madrid?

Isn't it handy to have all your contacts, prepared maps, .pdf guides. dictionary/translation apps, photos of your passport etc stored on the phone you already have? SIM cards are quite cheap, no? Last time I travelled in Spain I bought a local, with enough data/calls for my time there (a month or so) and really enjoyed having my own decent phone with all my docs in place. (I use an unlocked Samsung)

I have never bought a burner phone, but the SIM card comes "free" with the minutes you buy.

Have you tried to send a SMS on a basic phone lately?
